Did Shalane Flanagan screw Notosha Rogers?

You don't know how much space a 110lb distance runners frame can take up on the track. She had, like, 4 lanes blocked so no one could get by and keep the pace going.

Exactly. Plus Flanagan is a professional athlete paid by Nike. If she doesn't run, NBC doesn't interview her for the race and you don't see the swoosh running around the track for 32 minutes. And as a sponsored athlete she probably receives $$ bonuses if she wins a national championship, etc. if she wants to run and earn some money then why shouldn't she? It's her job after all.

As for the race itself, here are some facts:

- Rogers ran a fantastic race. Watch her post race interviews. She doesn't complain about not getting the A. In fact she says her plan was to just race and if she got the A then it would be a bonus.

- Flanangan probably was in front for less than 200 meters before Maier cut off Rogers right around the 1600m mark

- Rogers lost about 3 seconds from the fall but was with the leaders at 2000m.

- No one went with Maier but were instead content to sit behind Flanagan

So how did Flanagan screw Rogers over?

I find her audacity of thinking she could just go to the front and control the tempo to advantage one athlete, in an event that she made clear she wasn't going to run at the games, distasteful, even as I agree that they are all grown women and didn't need to revere the almighty Shalane as they did.

We can agree to disagree here. I don't think Rogers has Shalane to blame for not making the team, and I've made that perfectly clear.

One fact you miss is NR never got a chance to go with DM because of the fall which was directly caused by SF

SF impeded other runners to help a friend, which is a whole lot different than Rupp helping his by pulling him along. Rupp never got in the way of anyone.

It was damn courteous of the lapped runners in the mens 10k to move aside to lanes 2 & 3, btw, to let the leaders pass knowing that Ritz was chasing the A standard.

Have you ever watched a race before? Lapped runners in most 10000s go into the 2nd & 3rd lanes to let others pass. It had nothing to do with Ritz chasing the A.

As for Rogers fall, it was directly caused by Maier cutting her off.

Rogers fell as a result from not going around when the pace slowed down. Maier was the only one realizing that the pace needed to pick up so when she tried to push her way out wide from the inside, Rogers went down. So please, explain to me how one person can impede 20 runners? If Rogers goes around when the pace slows, she doesn't get bumped by Maier.

That would be hot if Flanagan screwed Rogers, mmmmmmm.

This thread is a big disappointment. Based on the thread title...I was expecting a story that was a little hotter.

I did watch the race. Rogers wasn't going anywhere. She was sitting content on the outside. Even lets Hastings go around her. Your comment about how it may have been Bawcom who clipped her shows how bad your recollection is. Watch the video for a memory - jogger.

Duh, SF caused the pack to compact, so none of the runners had room to do anything but stop suddenly, which didn't allowing anyone the room to move outside, and caused Natosha Rogers to fall. It was SF who caused Natosha Rogers to fall, not Deborah Maier.

Did you read your own explanation? Flanagan was the cause of the pack having to slow to a stop, as she was the one at the front. Maier, Rogers, and all the others being blindsided by Flanagan is what happened.

Maier did not cause Flanagan to do what she did.

Rogers should have been dq'd for cutting in on Flanagan on the final turn anyway.

Look at the splits, 1st 5k vs 2nd 5k.

The runners were on pace for the A from the start, prior to Flanagan blocking them from the front. Watch Lisa Uhl's interview. Flanagan told her in the race she was going to slow everyone down, and she did.

None of the runners had any room to do anything about it? Unequivocally false. Anyone on the outside, including Rogers had plenty to do about it. I agree that Shalane went to the front and slowed it down (blocking is a hyperbole). Anyone can see that. What you cannot seem to see is that the group sat behind her willingly.

Explain to me how one runner can impede 20 runners.
