I thought Rupp was pretty impressive today. He basically was the guy who broke all but two of the runners in the field. I have to say that he did no have quite the kick that he is capable of, but bearing in mind that neither did Mo. Let's remember that the to of them have been training for several weeks at Park City. After another couple weeks up there, they will go into their rest phase and begin to peak first for Olympic Trials races, and then for the Olympics. Both of them are on the perfect trajectory and should be able to crank a few more seconds off each of the final two laps once they are a bit rested.

rupp's progression is on track perfectly.

he finally ran the 10k people like salazar were projecting.

he finally ran the 1500 that his speed work and distance runs indicated he could run

he's now running fast at the end of a competitive race.

i don't have the splits nor the actual wind readings for the race, but if it was windy and IF the pace was slack in the middle (mo's quote) then the effort indicates 12:50 is on for rupp and further peaking may bring the sub 12:50, just like salazar was intending.

without bad luck or injury , rupp is no longer a long shot for a medal.

It was a bit windy others commented during the race.

All I got to say is Bernard Lagat. Idc if he's losing speed, that man wants a gold medal and i think he's gonna get it. He'll be there at the end, and everyone will be like "yea right, he has no speed left in those legs." Then he'll pull out one more classic Bernie-style finish and everyone will s*it themselves and praise the almighty Lagat once again. But after this year he's done lol. Sad to think this is the last chance for one of the greatest distance runners in history, bar none. I still think if he would have tried for the WR in the 5k at a younger age, and did specific 5k training, he would have got it. He ran f*cking 12:53 at age 36. LMAO. If he was still 26-30 he could do 12:40's in his sleep.

currently, rupp has same basic 1500 speed as mo ( couda won that race if andrews hadn't "blocked" him ) at 3'34, is maybe 2 - 3s slower at 5k & perhaps double that at 10k

rupp is younger & has more upswing potential

i think by next year he'll have made that gap up on mo & may evn be able to kick with him on last laps

london may be bit early to do that, but you never know !

60.5 laps with a fast last lap of ~55 to run 12:31 is conceivable.

I don't know if there is anyone who can run away from Farah like that today.

I thought Farah looked like he was biding his time to move up and was slowly upping his pace (eg. he caught and passed Bekele around or just past 4000m in setting up his last lap) - while Rupp dropped back a bit, and had to make a real push to the front at the bell to be with Farah - looked just like the WC final. In this race Rupp was able to last only about 120m or so in second even with this push, and then was passed again by Koech. I think this shows that while Rupp is in phenomenal shape, he may not be able to sustain a faster pace over the last couple of laps to try and outlast a kick from faster closers - he didn't look like he could have today, at least. And to make sure he can outlast the kickers, maybe he needs a sub 60 penultimate lap before the final one - or did he do that in this race?

Taking this to another level, I wonder if doing something like Daniel Komen (1997 WCs) running a 58 and 57 to break the field open as he hit the final mile, before settling to 62s for the last two laps, could win in a major final today. I think that Paul Kipkoech did the same thing in the 1987 WC 10k as well - with 2k to go he made a surge over 2 laps in 155ish. I guess these two races were slower than recent winning times in championships - I think Komen won his 5k in something near 13:10, and Kipkoech won in upwards of 27:30? But do you think someone who is strong enough, and with enough self-belief, could do something like this and break open an Olympic final?

Did I remember the race wrong? The LR recap said Rupp was in front with Farah with 2 to go - before the fall. I could have sworn Farah didn't go to the front that early, but did they both move up with 2 to go?

Even if that is the case, it still looks like Rupp wasn't able to live with a faster sustained pace - Farah did slow it down in the 4th km, but I still don't think it's likely that Rupp could have kept going with 61s for the last 5 laps.

Greetings, fellow Seoulite. I don't think the field would go for it. If somebody takes off with four laps to go and runs a 1:55 for the next two laps, the pack behind might just counter with a 2:02 or 2:04. Now, with two laps to go, our hero is all gassed out and the pack, while having some lead in their legs, is still reasonably fresh and tracking a worn-out runner with about a 50m lead.

The only person who could make it work would be the strongest runner in the field, but I don't know why the strongest runner wouldn't try to do something like running close to 5 minutes for the last 2k.

Allowing for the fact that Rupp hasn't yet achieved international fame, what makes you think he won't be capable of a sub-12:50, 26:30 this year? I think that's precisely what he'll be capable of. But can he handle the tactics of an Olympic final? I don't think a medal is out of reach. The boy has yet to sharpen.

But due to the Kenyan trials 10k the night prior, the kenyan portion of this field was rather weak.
