Rupp did not wear the mask due to allergies because it's not allergy season yet in New York. It won't be for another month. He wore the mask because he was still hacking away from the persistent cough that he caught back in Dusseldorf in early February. His doctors told him that it would help. Obviously they were wrong. He got rid of the silly prop midway through the race and he was fine.

Good thing the clock doesn't have fashion preferences, or Galen might have more problems than the "Brian Sell is the only true American runner" fan group on the Let's Run message boards...

I really really hope that he wears a fuel belt next time, and smashes Jesus Halls American record...

How do you know he has a persistent cough? How could Rupp run the time he did if he had this type of problem?

If Galen Rupp ran ~2:08 with a fuel belt, it would be the greatest troll in the history of running. I mean, this is up there, but my word... can you imagine the reaction if Rupp WON a major marathon while wearing a fuel belt?

Cold, dry air (low humidity) can easily dry out and crack sinuses and open a path to infection. Hot, dry air can do the same thing.

The mask DOES impede air flow,and gives us a clue to his condition. I think he and the team got a chuckle out of it. And I think it was creative gamesmanship - a distraction to other runners.

I asked his coach, that's how.

People ditched their gloves and hats at some point too. Obviously those didn't work for the first 10miles because they got rid of those silly things.

Okay, but you would be assuming that a runner would always tell a coach the truth about their condition. My guess is that Rupp wasn't exactly honest about his actual condition. There is no possible chance he could run the time he did if his respiratory system was heavily impeded. If true, then Rupp will give the major half-marathon WR a major spanking very soon.

Geb has asthma. Geb ran NY half in similar weather. Geb did not have mask. Geb drops out with asthma attack.Rupp is not Geb, but seeing the the greatest drop out with an asthma attack seems to have inspired doing something about it.If you run a 60:30, anything you do is cool, not dorky. The mask is Rupp certified, as is NY.

Gebrselassie did not run the NYC HM in similar weather. It was 55 degrees. He dropped out because he had a head cold which exacerbated his asthma.

Gebrselassie won the 2007 NY marathon in 59:24 when it was held in August. 70 degrees, allergy season, didn't affect him one iota.

That's exactly what I had read; it was for his asthma.

I have a question: If rojo, Kevin Hanson and the other "tough guys" who weren't there thought people needed to " grow a set" when it was warm for the Chicago marathon, where does a mask on a 35 degree day land on the manliness scale?

american distance runners make me embarrassed to be an american distance runner. all the superfluous clothing they put on for a race, something people from poorer places would never consider. a face mask for above freezing weather?? arm warms instead of a long sleeve shirt ?? it is embarrassing.

Why should poor people dictate what we do?? Why does it matter that they didn't have access to that stuff and therefore don't do it out of habit? As a COPD sufferer I read the malmo versus ??? links with interest Thanks. In late 2006 I read about a Dutch study on using low dose sildenafil(Viagra) for reducing pulminary artery pressure in COPD patients. When I brought the subject up with my lungguy he followed up and I became his first patient to use lowdose sildenafil.

He said while aware of the study he did not really look into it because the study size was so small -if memory serves n=10- but because of my prompting he stayed abreast of developments and a few months later he asked me if I wanted to try it. It was off label use then and now it is a recognised treatment for PAH.
