Hmmm. What I said is that of all the things I read, not much looks all that new. Do you know what I've read? I did wonder if maybe I was just reading the wrong stuff. But forget what I believe -- what the heck do I know? What I think or believe only really matters to me.What I can assert as absolute incontrovertible fact, is that in the past 3 years, on this forum, whenever I have asked, "what's new?", or "who's better", or any similar question about training, I did not receive a single direct response.I think I'm really trying hard not to talk about Lydiard at all, but trying to figure out what has happened since. Now I've learned, as incredible as it may seem, that it's not even written down, at least in books. In the last 50 years, no one bothered to write a book.I won't discuss what you dislike about Lydiard followers, except I've never seen, heard, or read, a Lydiard follower belittle anyone, except in response to personal attacks from Lydiard bashers. And I'm not really sure what you mean by "pure Lydiard style". So it's hard to accept any notion that "the best in the world train differently than a pure Lydiard style".Lydiard combined intervals with volume. That's not new.

But I haven't read much that looks all that new.You really don't think we've learned much in the past 50 years? For one I think we finally realized that it's not about all quality or all volume but about running a lot of miles, and then doing a majority of those miles fast. Yes, Lydiard had volume, lots of it. Lydiard also had quality. The point being, the best runners in the world run fast A LOT. I think we've finally figured out that the intervals of the 50s and 90s and the volume of the 70s and 80s needed to be combined. The one thing I don't like about Lydiard followers is that many only worry about mileage totals and plenty of that mileage may be unnecessarily slow. I've also seen Lydiard followers belittle those who enjoy the interval based training of Igloi and Stampfl, citing that Lydiards runners have run faster. But now Lydiards runners have been better by many many seconds and minutes. Does that make Lydiards contributions to the sport any less important? No, just as important as Iglois. But now the best in the world train differently than a "pure" Lydiard style.
