Meb Unable To Reach Deal With Boston Marathon Organizers - May Not Run Spring Marathon

We just updated the homepage and have the article up about how the NYRR announced today Meb, Hall and Abdi will all run the NYC Half on March 20th. More here: http://letsrun.com/2011/keflezighi-0208.php What most people are failing to realize is the big story really is that Meb as of now won't be running the 2011 Boston marathon. It's clear from the way the story is written that the $$ weren't right. As David Monti wrote in the above article, Meb said, "In terms of a spring marathon, we were hoping to do Boston, but things didn't work out that way." Since reading that, I took a look at the full transcript of Meb's teleconference today and Meb also had the following quote about the negotiations with Boston. [quote][b]Meb said:[/b] "I'm hoping to do a spring marathon. To do Boston was my anticipation, but that's most likely not to happen. And hopefully online we'll do something whether I'm going to run or I'm not going to run a spring marathon or not in a few days on Thursday on my website."[/quote] [quote][b]Meb also said:[/b] "I was hoping to do Boston to break a streak. I obviously have done great things of breaking the streak winning the New York City Marathon or getting the Olympic medal." Now things have not worked out the way they should have, and it may be best to keep the spring half-marathon and get ready for a fall marathon.[/quote] In the middle of the teleconference, a reporter asked Meb if training setbacks or injuries had caused him to not to run a spring marathon and Meb answered in the negative. [quote][b]Meb once again said:[/b] "No, I didn't have injury setbacks at all. I was sick most of after Thanksgiving and December and January. I was hoping to do the half marathon in Houston, and eventually I was hoping to do cross country in San Diego. But no injuries, just I was sick. I couldn't shake it off. I was sick for six weeks or so and that's what happened. In terms of the spring marathon, we were hoping to do Boston, but things have not worked out that way."[/quote] So the question now becomes, will Boston up the ante or Meb lower his asking price? Or will Meb find another spring marathon?

Wow, who left the door open for the illiterate Jogger's Earth interlopers? Meb's been running marathons for nine years, if he had it in him to win Boston then he'd probably have gotten closer than he has to this point. Plus the time of Boston being won in times close to Meb's PR are long gone. Forget London, he could run 2:06 to 2:07 in Boston now and be 3rd-6th.

How many chances did Boston give him to win it...Two to be exact. It took him trying five times to nail it in NYC. NYC was smart enough to figure it out and invest in the guy. Boston folks aren't so bright though.

How many more chances should he need? He's really going to beat 13 guys who have PRs over a minute faster than his? I could make you my personal ATM betting on races with you.

When running NYC or Boston you run to compete so fast times have no relevance. He has beat guys who have 4 to 5 minute PRs many times. Check your history. In 2004 he was ranked 38th or 39th fastest and you know what happened there and NYC he was ranked easily 10th to 13th. Please give me your ATM.
