from my memory and training log, the 14.8 milers were in the fall and early winter. while the mind recalls them year round, they ceased as the outdoor track came around....track season rarley saw mile reps....from what I have, the only time you ran a mile was in a ladder from either 2k or 1600m, down. i recall a workout that the "a" group (not squid group) did:
falcon started with a mile- solo 4:03
then everyone else joined in...1200m 3:02, 800 2:00, 600m 1:28 500m 71, 400m 56, 300 43, 200, 27
Joe was unreal at that time.
xc there were 8 weeks of intervals, starting the 4th week of sept.
first track workout for indoors was right before xmas break. you would then get a sheduele from coach (written on a calendar- with always a merry xmas 10mi
upon return, 2-3 track workouts per week, as often times it would be too cold to run outside. first track meet was mid january, then another home meet the following week. most were as fast at these meets as they were the entire indoor/out door season.
indoor workouts were always entertaining. tennis balls on the track, indoor cough and the old piece of carboard coach would have standardized splits written on (as we ran in lane 6 of the track to save the lags and each lap time was obviously an odd distance. I think it worked out to be just under or over 7 laps for the mile.
jan-feb 89 i recall many 8 mile runs on the indoor track becasue of ice storms leaving the grout, i mean ground, too slick to run on.
