A higher score on SAT than your 5k time

Ok I actually did that too.

GRE score: high 1500's (can't remember exactly)

college 5k: 15:05

I was thinking dammit I wish I had run my 5k PR earlier....then I realized staying good in school until later was also an option!

One of the few honest answers on Lets Run in the last 10 years. By the way, in 1968 you couldn't use a calculator. There were no adjustments and no such thing as "extended time." Regardless, I'll admit I wasn't a genius, but I doubt there were more than a handful of such student/athletes in the entire US.

One thing has been proven demonstrably by this thread:

There are more posters on this thread that can't handle the idea that there are people out there who ran faster and scored higher than them on the SAT than there are posters who scored higher on the SAT than their 5k time.

Not a matter of "can't handle" there big guy it's more like "can't believe" the bullshit. So I guess the fact that there are more of "us" than them proves you're one of "them."

I think it is more impressive if you actually did both in high school. The PR coming years and years afterword is still impressive, but doesn't indicate that the individual was as awesome a high school student-athlete.

Looks like I came up short in high school with a 15:36 5k and a 1530 SAT. But if we use the liftime PR, I managed it with a 14:35, but that was about 6 years later, in college.

1320 on the old scoring ('74) and 14:30. To explain, I think newer scores tended to be 100-150 points higher, based upon equivalent percentile ranks. Got 1450 on the GRE (also 1600 scale) five years later, so maybe I get an asterisk?

Actually, I inverse-steal toothpaste. I left my own Crest in New York, and apparently will never live it down, even on public message boards. (But I will readily admit to a few healthy outgassings here and there.)

One thing that I think no one's yet mentioned, with regards to the high school challenge: The smarter you are, the more likely you are to graduate high school early and get the 1600 (or 2400) at age 14, 15 or 16, but not the 5k.

This would tend to deprive the high school ranks of smart people who are also talented runners.

Granted, few people do this, but that's less relevant than the proportion of total outliers that do this. I have no idea what the numbers are, but I do know one guy this happened to. He graduated 2 years early with a 5k around 16:30-16:40 (I think) and 1600 SAT. Give that kid more years of high school and he probably would've gone under 16.

How about an adult version of the school/running biathlon:

More peer-reviewed, indexed publications authored than your marathon time is minutes over 2 hours.

Example: Haile would need to publish 4 papers.

A productive scientist toward the end of his/her career would need to run 3:40 marathon or so.

An assistant professor would need to be a 2:30-type.

Wow, this has been a fun thread! Interesting too how many unsuccessful proposals for a similar running/academic challenge have been suggested, both in this thread and others.
