WHEATING 3:30.9

I just posted what Track and Field News has listed as the collegiate record out of season, but I recalled Lagat as running around 3:30 after his senior year (he was 24 or so at the time) and indeed, I could swear that Noureddine Morceli, who had a short juco stint, ran around 3:31 in Europe after the season. Here is from Lagat's USATF bio, where it mentions the 3:30 from Zurich in 1999, and also the 3:27.40 at Zurich that he ran in 2004, notably AFTER he became a U.S. citizen. I would think that this should be the American record, not the 3:29 from 2005. Obviously, Lagat competed for Kenya in 2004 in the Olympics, despite becoming a U.S. citizen in, I think, June 2004 (not announcing it at the time, obviously). He wanted to be able to compete in the Olympics and couldn't have done it if he'd switched nationalities then, because of the IAAF's three year waiting requirement after switching nationalities: he could and did compete for the U.S. only in 2007. He had (has?) dual citizenship in 2004, so you would think that his 3:27.4 and other post June performances would count for both Kenyan and American records that year.

2004: Olympic 1,500m silver medalist (3:34.30)…World Indoor Champs 3,000m gold medalist (7:56.34)…1st at Brussels (3:36.24)…1st at Zurich ( 3:27.40WL)…ranked #1 in world at 1,500m/mile by T&FN…best of 3:27.40.

1999: NCAA Outdoor5,000m champ (14:01.09)…NCAA Indoor mile champ (3:55.65)…NCAA Indoor 3,000m champ (7:54.92)…3rd at Zurich (3:30.56)…ranked #4 in world by T&FN…best of 3:30.56.

I just don't get this automatic indictment. The guy showed he was capable of a sub-1:45 two years ago, in only his third season of competitive running, and made the Olympic team as a true sophomore in college. That is ridiculous talent. What is his PR now? 1:44.62, run a couple of weeks back. He was in 3:36 form in college, training through the latter part of the season to peak for Europe, which he is now doing. Admittedly, I think he's capable of faster than 1:44.6, but he hasn't run it yet. His 3:51 at Pre was also a surprise, as well as a wake up call that he was capable of running with the "big boys."

However, I would ask the question, does he sleep in an altitude tent or house? Because that's a legal form of blood doping.

From watching the video of the race it doesn't even look like he was trying down the home stretch. I've seen races where it actaully looks like he is killing himself when kicking to the finish. He might be not trying so it doesn't looks obvious hes on something. The way he looked throughout the race I think he could have won but just didn't to not be so obvious of being on something.

Wheating ran 1:45.0 (olympian) and 3:38 by blowing away a field with Pro runners in it......in 2008. He closed out that 3:38 with a :26.0 last 200, do you really think 3:38 was his limit that day? Really? He strided thru 3:37 at regionals this year on a double. He killed a 3:35, 3:36, 3:36, 3:37, 3:37, 3:37 and various 3:38-3:39 runners this season.

He ran 3:34 at Pre, pretty logical for someone who can handily beat 3:35 and 3:36 guys. If you think this was a massive PR you are very feeble minded, and have no idea of CONTEXT or what has been happening all around you.

Why do you think Malmo and the rest said he had done plenty to prove he deserved to be in PRE PRIOR to the PRE race? Because they knew how to read the signs which while obvious to me, must be a foreign language to several morons on here.

Wheating ran 7-8m extra +a stumble at 500m point. That was clearly worth sub 3.30 under ideal conditions.

conditions were pretty ideal. Rarely is someone able to just hug the rail the whole time. With that being said, I have little doubt that either later this season or probably next year wheating will dip under 3:30 and challenge the American record. Maybe Webb will come back and do it also?

Uh fastest race of the year with great rabbits in perfect weather. He still would've been at the back of the pack. Made no difference. He ran what he ran.

It doesn't look at this point like Oregon is claiming Wheating's 1500 as a collegiate record. After the news posting of Wheating's Monaco 1500 time on the UO athletic site, this "2010 UO track highlight sheet" was referenced:

Rather, they list AJ Acosta's 3:36.48 run on 7/10 as the fastest UO 1500 time this year, while Wheating's mile run of 3:51.74 on 7/3 at Pre is listed as the fastest mile and a school record. Wheating was wearing a UO singlet at Pre.

If they are going to count PRE and not the recent 1500, it would have been nice if they had taken a split at PRE since he had to have been at least 3:35 there, which was a school record and the first under 3:36 for the ducks.

Actually, it may be a little early yet to see if Oregon claims Wheating's 1500 mark as a school record. They haven't as of the news yesterday.

It is true that T&FN keeps a list of collegiate seniors that have competed through Aug 31 and have beaten the collegiate records.

Both those are collegiate records out of season, so he qualifies. He's still running in a UO singlet anyway.

the leaders at pre went were split at around 3:35.2 so at 1500 wheating was probably 3:36 high or 37 low for his 1500. The 3:35 from the leaders was the split they showed during the race on tv.

They must have an age limit requirement because Lagat did run 3:30 the summer after college but he was 24 when he did it.

How about we give him the 3:27.4 as the AR, and take his silver medal away that he won for Kenya in 2004, and any WC medals he got in 2005-2007? Sounds fair to me.

All of a sudden US milers are pretty strong. What are they doing differently than a decade ago when things were so bad for US milers?

I think the 90's were a combination of grunge music, depression, lack of expectations and a massive fall off of interest in running.

When Stember aimed at 4:00 in high school it really helped spark a revolution of prep milers. That combined with the internet help spread popularity AND knowledge for both coaches and runners. Coaches and runners now know A LOT more than they used to. We also got out of the low mileage all interval phase of the 90's. Guys in high school now run more than guys in college did back then.

It's a lot of logical things really and the snowball just keeps getting bigger ever since Webb, Ritz, Hall, Rupp spun into Derrick, Fernandez and now Lukas and the truck loads of guys who get in the 4:00-4:08 range every year now.

High school underclassmen are running 9:00 for two miles and gals are splitting 2:00 on relays. It trickles down and it trickles up. Guys like Wheating light a fire under the pros asses, and guys like Andrews light a fire under the Wheatings assess. And guys like Andrews in high school are inspired by guys like Wheating.
