Master runners, what is your 400 meter time?

I ran a 61 at Penn Relays on a 50-59 4x4 team and got smoked by two guys on my third (slowest) leg alone. I'm a distance runner with decent speed, but when I was asked to be on the team, I thought they were kidding until I realized that it was 50+, not masters. I'd have thought that a 61 would be respectable for 50, but next to those guys it just made me look silly. The anchor-leg guys were running in the low 50s.

Several guys on my team can break their age in the 400, but they all place regularly in Masters Nationals and Worlds, so, yeah, that's not easy.

i haven't run in 8 days (but am pretty fit)...taking a break from xc club nationals, but i believe i could break 60 seconds if i went out right now and warmed-up for 20 minutes. a 59-point would be very doable, but to go under 57--i couldn't do it.

With a strong XC base I beleive you could do a sub 57,but you would have to change gears. More speed work-outs.Start with 10X300. Remember that for the most part you have used slow twitch muscle and for speed you will need fast twitch.With only Sat. work-outs I ran a 65 at age 62,doing 10X300 @ 65 with 3 min. rest.This was with very little base.

how many posts on this thread are from the same person? I guess 50%. The other day wejo did an IP check on a thread, and about 3/4 of the posts were from the same person, arguing back and forth with himself. This thread has so many posts from people with extremely similar style names, and random, short, similar posts. dead giveaways.

Anyone want to fess up to this? And then explain why you have no life?

First, why would you even care if it were the same person. could be that he/he has a duel personality and forgets which one has just answered. Seems to me that you need to get a life, or maybe not look at this site.

Ran a 53 flat (440 then) in 1979 as a freshman in H.S. at 150 lbs. Then I didnt run the rest of my high school years (Man, if I could go back!). I won most of the time, although their were two runners that always beat me by a step. Anyways, now Im 47, weigh 207 lbs (down from 215), eating right, losing weight and been training for about 3 weeks. I timed myself in the 400 at 1 minute 40 seconds. I know slow, but it will get better (my target weight is 175 lbs). I want to join a masters track team when I get my 400 meter time alot better. My question is, Whats a good time to shoot for to be competive with my age group. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

That's a link to current Masters 400m rankings in the USA. Maybe that'll give you some idea of what's considered competitive in your age group. Losing weight will definitely help. Just be careful in training. Sprinting at 47 after years away from it means a lot of stress on your body. It's a high impact, high intensity activity. Build your speed gradually and take care of yourself. You're a long way off from that 60-sec barrier, but that doesn't mean you can't get there. It's just going to take some patience and dedication.

I think you need a 55 at local meets and a 53 low at nationals. If you need help, I run 51.6 hand time. I also coach 100 to 400 meters runners, so if you need more advice here is my e-mail.

Interesting that the first man to run under 50 @ 50 has had his WR rejected by the USATF for sketchy age citation. He had knocked two seconds off the official record of 51 seconds. As more Africans get involved in Maters track, this sort of thing will become more common (like that Satain guy from Ethiopia/Israel who is apparently late forties but often cited as mid-fifties while running incredible times)

How is your running going today, are you still training hard. What about running more 5k's this year?

I ran 58/400 this year, at the age of 54 years old. I can run a much faster time, if I train harder this winter.

I used to be able to crank out a 56 back a couple years ago, Now I'd guess somewhere around a 58. I started running slower when things started getting lower.

3, mile race 14:30 age 42

Half/Marathon 1:16 age 43

4 mile, 20:51 age of 45.

I only ran 55 miles a week.
