Whaaaaat are you talking about? No, Bekele could never run the same pace as he ran on the track over 5k for another mile on XC. Physically impossible. And if he claimed he did it at some unknown race that was never verified, I think we'd all assume he made it up/ran a short course.

16:08 for 4 miles on a XC course. He's not kidding anyone.

Possibly if this was Bekele, Gebre or Mo but not from a guy with a PB of 13:33 for 5000m and 28:40 for 10000m. He couldn't do that on a track in perfect conditions with a rocket up his arse and to think otherwise is too stupid for words. His times don't make any sense and he is making a fool of himself to believe otherwise.

Well you of course missed the entire point of my post, genius. Which was to point out the foolishness of the claim that Bekele could do it was as crazy as the claim Lindgren did it.

And no, it is not completely impossible that so someone who averaged 4:03 miles for 3.11 miles on a track could run 4:02s for 4 miles on some cross country course. Extremely unlikely? -- of course. Impossible? Nah.

On a 2% - 3% downgrade road race?

The one year I was in the Hood - Coast relay there were unbelievably fast split times for the first stage.

You realise that a cross country course is much slower than a running track? So, Bekele could not run 4:03 pace for 3.1 miles on an xc course. And certainly could not run 4:03 pace for 4 miles.

He could probably run 16:40ish

^This. Mt. SAC is the hardest course I have ever raced. Along with the obvious reality that nobody could ever run 4:02 pace on a track or a road for 4 miles. I'm guessing Gerry probably ran it in 21-ish, maybe 20-high. But not even 18. I googled it and it looks HARD.

Perhaps a marker on the course was improperly spotted, etc. But, this statement is from the guy who's quoted saying things such as:

"I think the most I ran in a single day was around 125 miles. I ran to Mt. Spokane, 44 miles out of town; to a swimming hole 17 miles away; and even to a lake, 70 miles out of Spokane, to go swimming. I continued doing this for about 7 years."

I've read a lot about Gerry Lindgren over the past 20 years. Haven't heard this one before. Think about it. So, he averaged 4:02 per mile which would have obliterated several track records at the time. I don't think so. Yes, he had great talent but does have a tendency to exaggerate a bit much.
