Actually this is not correct. US officials have confirmed that indeed a protest was filed well before the 30 minutes...and they were not the only country to protest (Ethiopia also you might think?).....the comment from the IAAF official is clearly a diversionary tactic. Ridiculous situation. They cannot let results stand as are. To even talk of needing a protest seems strange to say the least; officials DQ athletes who step on lanes; there is no need of protest for this to happen....

You're right about the rules of track. In High School, as of this year, you cannot start a race with a real gun. What!? OK, I picture some obscure track meet somewhere where the starter forgot his starter's gun. Some idiot says that he has a gun in his pick up truck. They start a race and the bullet comes down in someone's backyard who's having a bar-b-que. Someone gets hurt, so now we have a rule.

Women can run less than a 10K in the World Championship, but God forbid if some high school girl's shorts aren't above her hips.

Of course the biggest question here is what were the officials doing?

One starts the race and electronic timing takes care of the results.

These guys go through preparation - should know the rules. This is the World Championships.

You're there with your flag in your hand. There should be a starter and a guy with a recall gun. He is looking for a reason to fire it in the first 100m. Sounds like it was pretty clear here.

It's not like it is Penn Relays with another final going off 10 minutes after the race is over. And the guys at Penn still would never have missed this.

If I was Wallace Spearmon, I would be pissed. He lost his Olympic Medal because he stepped one foot into the wrong lane. If only he knew he could cut off an entire 1/2 stagger.

I would have to suspect every athlete that cut in early to be using PEDs. Clearly they feel it's acceptable to do ANYTHING to win, and it's just one more step to taking the good stuff.

You call a race back if something goes wrong.

If people fall down in the first 100m they call it back. If the timer malfunctions they call it back (if they notice quick enough).

Half the field cutting in would be reason to call it back.

Sorry but you are wrong about calling it back. Watch any 800 race where there is a lane violation. They just get a flag.
