What animal wins a race that's 100m in water then 100m on land

We've been through this already. Unless you can teach the bird to swim 100m and then run 'on land' they cannot participate. Flying doesn't cut it.

Caribou or deer can actually motor through the water at alarming speed.

Years ago my dad heard dogs chasing a deer on the American side of the St.Lawrence river. The deer swam across the river which is a mile wide at the point where we lived.

A Hippopotamus would be another good choice.

I would have to say the winner would be those stupid little Basilisk (jesus although the guy probably sank) lizards that run so fast they literally walk on water. As long as it is a young one. Older ones max out at about 25 meters before they sink.

No way a leopard seal doesnt win. They would get through the swim in about 7-8 seconds. they would be so far ahead that even if they waddle at a reasonable speed they win.

what would be the WR for a human? i think around 1:04-1:05 and it would be held by a swimmer, not by a runner.

I think it's moose vs horse vs river otter. I really can't see the hippo or polar bear as a contender. They are just so darn huge. No way can they get that acceleration going. It'd be like Reese Hoffa coming out of blocks. Plus, that video of the hippo "running" was rather pathetic.

True, there's not much water out west where pronghorns live, but they definitely swim when they have to. Read this blog and check out the second picture down.http://pronghornpassage.blogspot.com/I think pronghorn definitely beats cheetah based on superior swim time, and I think the smaller size, and thus better acceleration and lower drag help the pronghorn versus the moose for transitions. Not to mention that a pronghorn at full speed on land is almost twice as fast as a moose (61 mph vs. 35 mph). If the moose is a serious contender, then I think the pronghorn definitely has to be as well.

These refs do say 13 mph for a deer in water. That's 13 motherf***ing mph! Forget the moose with a measley 6 mph in water, 35 mph on land. The pronghorn is smaller, accelerates way faster, and blows the moose away at top speed.

Both cite the swimming speed of deer as up to 13 mph and land speed around 35-40. Assuming that is true, they have to be a contender.

Yes, but I thought that we agreed that the course is grassy (look up 6 or 7 posts). Leopard seals can slide along on ice pretty well, but on grass they have to do the worm, and that makes them slow enough to be caught, I would think.

Forget the moose? That 6mph stat is for a 10 mile swim. Thats right, a moose can swim 10 miles at 6mph pace! Thats a serious engine. Combine that with their obvious on land explosiveness and its obvious that they would be much much faster in a 100m swim.

The moose is about 10 times more massive than a pronghorn (figure 800-1500 lbs vs 80-150 lbs), so the pronghorn can hit top swim speed much faster than a moose, and has a major aerobic engine as well, and has a much better transition from water to land. Also, the moose's "on land explosiveness" cannot compare to a pronghorn's.

Also the coat of the moose is going to be massively water-logged... gotta slow it down?

On second thoughts... are we allowed to shave the moose?

Being light isnt the end all be all for a sprint. Would Bolt be faster if he was 150lbs? Are the fastest swimmers the lanky skinny ones. The weight can add bouyancy for the moose. Plus a moose's coat is more comparable to a horse - short and tightly packed hair wouldn't take in extreme amounts of water. The is the weight supposed to affect its acceleration out of the water? Who gets moving quicker, a distance runner (pronghorn) or an NFL linebacker (moose)? Your damn straight the moose is superior.

Moose hooves are more than twice as large than deer hooves, so I feel a moose can move through the water with a lot of power over the deer. (just like a lot of olympic swimmers have larger than normal hands and feet)

I think the best choice for a deer species is the 'Key Deer'. It is a type of whitetail deer that lives in the Florida keys and they are adapted to swimming from island to island.

The hippo is definitely faster than man.

Given that a pronghorn's top speed (61 mph) is much faster than a moose's (35 mph), I don't see how your analogy of the moose being the sprinter while the pronghorn is the distance runner holds up. Pronghorn kicks but in both categories over moose.

Second, I'm not buying that a moose could hit top speed before a pronghorn. Size does slow down those first few steps. Go ask a sprints coach if losing 5-10 lbs would help your average sprinter get out of the blocks quicker. Linebackers carry a lot of weight because they need to make tackles, but they weigh 250 lbs, not 310 lbs like the defensive tackles because they also need to move faster than a tackle. Running backs weigh between 200-250 lbs because hitting the hole fast is more important than delivering or absorbing a blow.
