I don't know the UAA coach, but Coach Towne has more class and passion for the sport then pretty much any coach I've come across. I'm sure his quote was just as printed, he's that type of guy.
It's not a matter of class or no-class, the two coaches seem to have very different personalities. Coach Towne is already over it and looking how it can be fixed, and how ready he can have his team for another 10-16k race in a week.
UCSD's mistakes will be looked at and hopefully changes will be made, regardless of the level you guys place them on the "idiot" list.
One thing... I wonder who's team will do better at Nats, UAA or Chico? Will it be because of the weather differences in our country, talent, or coaches' demeanor. Maybe all three.
But I doubt it'll be because of the political spin that Chico's paper puts on their stories.
I was in that 1993 NCAA DII Race in Riverside CA when the leaders went the wrong way. I got like 75th place and I just remember people and caoches yelling at runners around the 4 mile mark that the course was short and the leaders went the wrong way! It was crazy but I dont remember much hoopla after the race or any talk about them re running it or anything. I was also at the NAIA Mid states meet in SW Kansas about 2 years ago when the women\'s leaders and front pack of about 25 went the wrong way 600 meters into the course. The ladies in about 25-30th where from SW and went the right way. So by the 1k there was a :30 time gap between the top 30 and the rest of the field. It was crazy and people where going crazy. The meet official jumped in front of the lead runners just after the mile and stopped the race. Everyone was bewildered and nobody knew what was going on! It was crazy and something I had never seen. They let the men run and then the women ran about an hour later. There was no lead vehicle and nobody at the turn telling the leaders where to go!
For those that qualified for nationals, I wonder how well rested they will be. Considering that top runners tend to relax at regionals and "save it" for nationals...running 16k at 10k race pace has to be tough. I hope they don't show up dead legged.
One time an old girlfriend who was a CC runner was using flags to direct me around her apartment. I made a wrong turn and ended up in her ass apparently prematurely.
At first she was pissed I couldn't follow her course (she apparently had an intricate plan for all kinds of action at different turns) but she got over it.
They should be plenty rested given the two weeks time.
You want to compare Chico versus UAA. Why does that matter? This thread is not about them. It is about the west regional and how bad it was run.
You must be a Chico runner or coach that has to steep low just to gain motivation.

I don't really think 2 weeks is enough to be fully rested when racing 16k at 10k pace. That's the same amount of time as they always get between regionals and nationals...yet if the top runners have the breathing run to do so, they usually take it easy at regionals so that they are well rested for nationals. I'm not saying that they will be beat, but I bet they won't be on top of their game. Their legs probably won't feel as springy as they would have otherwise.
As a west coast runner i thought XC courses were designed to lose runners, kind of like orienteering only without a map or compass.
When i went back East i realized XC was a great sport that could be run on fairly simple but still challenging courses.
I have run on some of the most stupid & needlessly complicated courses imaginable. I remember one in Long Beach CA where at the start line the coach tried to explain one section where we had to make alternating turns around playground equipment,
"make a left turn at the first slide,make a full circle around the slide and head west to the next slide, this time go right, make a half circle...."
Our whole team just stared at him with our mouths wide open,
"what the f*** is this guy talking about???!!!"
the Home team is laughing their ass off and then boom,
the race is on, It was a triangle meet & when we got to this section the top 3 guys from both visiting teams all went off course, and had to backtrack more than a half mile.
I figured this was just an example of a stupid coach trying to get a cheap win, but i ending up running alot of courses that really did not make sense.
Obviously if someone would have chalked the turns this whole mess would have never happened.

Whoever posted this is a retard. 2005 Was when Trade Tech had an illegal runner. It cost them the state championship and individual champ at state the guy was Dq'd and Oscar Uribe was awarded the statechampionship sine th Trade tech guy was 35. Romaldo Sanchez won the SCCC championship and was he favorite. Babey Wagnew, Tony Arendondo?, and Oscar Ogruwo? were not favorites in that race. 2004 was the little guy from Occ and 2006 was Oscar so hmm.
oh, it was chalked - there were arrows on the ground, on posts, everywhere. the flagging there was to moved back adn forth because the first time the were supposed to go right and the next time for them to go straight. it was set up to go straight and that is the way that the race went.
UCSD did a hell of a good job with the chalk and the flags, but the officials moved the flags to the position they were supposed to be in the second time around. The one thing that still gets to me (and i was in the race) is that UCSD site blames the runners, i just can't get over that. Man up and take responsibility for your mistakes.
the "officials" we speak of are just a bunch of students. there should have been a cross country student at that intersection and there must have not been.
I've heard that one of their coaches was at the intersection telling the bike to go straight. She appeared to be very mixed up.
maybe, but i know it wasn't one of the two XC coaches, they were at other points on the course. could have been a track coach, i had heard that rumor too!
