What the heck are you talking about? The DFW area gets one, maybe two ice/sleet storms a year. It gets cold at times, but winters are generally pretty enjoyable.
it's pretty nice today, cloud cover nice breeze. mid day run will be okay today a rarity this time of year.

Not only that, but it does commonly get into the 60s in the winter. Certainly not daily, but it does happen. txrunnergirl seems completely out of touch. Perhaps a troll trying to stir things up?
The Northeast sucks because we get both extremes: really hot and humid periods and freezing periods. It's terrible to train during both. The fall and spring usually have near perfect running weather, but all other times of the year just suck.
Funny, I"ve always wondered why the city was growing and popular, my friends that live there, or that have lived there, love it. Has to be one of those places that's an acquired taste. It's not a fun visit. I go a few times a year for work - have yet to find the charm. Though, the town where SMU is was very nice. I ran around those neighborhoods with my hotel jogging map.
Love Austin and strangely found Houston somewhat appealing, at least from a runner's perspective. It was a winter visit.

Everytime I hear someone in the northeast say it gets hot and humid I laugh. There is no comparison.
I just jumped back on this thread. I think the post by the guy passing out in the shower might make the front page.
The area around SMU is a nice. 2 good running stores not far from there that has running classes. Next time your in town check out the area between SMU and downtown. McKinney Ave. and Greenville Ave. Good eating and drinking estabs.
Trust me radishes, most of the people moving to Texas are not moving there for the quality of life (unless they are coming from Mexico, where it is a step up in many instances), and definately not for the running opportunities. People (and more importantly employers) are locating there because of the low cost of living, some decent schools and an affordable work force.
One other thing all of these cities have in common (with the exception of Austin) which you neglect to mention is that they consistantly rank in the top ten for most obese cities in the US. Maybe you know something I don't, but when I lived there, I found it to have some of the worst access to open space (again with the exception of Austin), some of the least runner and bike friendly roads (in most places there was no shoulder), and one of the least healthy populations I have ever witnessed (type 2 diabetes and obesity were rampant).
Just because a city is growing doesn't mean it is a nice place to live (unless you enjoy sitting inside watching television and eating fried food and barbeque).

Today it was ok out - only low 80's with 95% humidity around 8:15 AM. I live near the Houston area and, as you said, it does get pretty sucky in the summer. I hear people say that it gets to be in the 100's in areas like Arkansas etc., but as it's been stated - a lot fail to realize the humidity is where it starts to get bad. Last Saturday I went for a run at 7PM; it had cooled off to 93 degrees (from 98 that afternoon), but the humidity was in the 70% range, putting the heat index around 105-110.

Look, people who choose to be healthy or unhealthy are going to make that choice no matter where they live. If you really think there's nowhere decent to run in the metropolitan areas mentioned, then you just haven't looked around.
If you hate Texas, great, don't move here. There will be several hundred thousand others to take your place this year alone. Hosestly, I wish more people felt like you do. Our highways are already overcrowded with transplants.
Thank you. I will do that. Typically, my visits are corporate conferences with planned "fun" dreadful activities. Always prefer a viable escape option and we stay in this area.

For runners, a good running climate is an important, if not central part of our quality of life. The problem I have with Texas is that most jurisdictions are so concerned with attracting businesses and jobs that they don't invest in the infrarstructure necessary for a healthy population. When you limit or remove access to recreation, you do not create a healthy living environment. Take a look at Men's Fitness list of Fattest Cities in America and you will find that six of the top ten hail from the Lone Star State that you are promoting.
On the flip side, the only two cities they surveyed in Colorado were in the top five. That is because we have a climate that is conducive to exercising year round (I will take a couple days of snow to four plus months of hell any day), a population that supports an active lifestyle (in Texas we felt more like targets on the side of the road than parts of the community), and we invest large amounts of money in open space and bike lanes on roads (taxes for recreation don't attract businesses, but they do help reduce public health costs). Since this is a running forum I think the running environment is a more important factor in the quality of life than any other.

First, I'm not "promoting" Texas. Just correcting exaggerations and statements of misfact. I'll repeat: if you think there's nowhere decent to run in the metropolitan areas listed previously, then you just haven't tried to find them. They're there. Yes, the climate is hot. I've been running in Texas for almost 20 years and have learned to deal with it just fine. Somehow, hot weather (which has been GREATLY exaggerated in this thread) doesn't ruin my "quality of life". Finally, and with this statement I'm done, if you're relying on local governments to create "infrastructre" to keep you healthy, then I truly feel sorry for you.

Agreed. DC is worse than New England but it still is nothing compared to much of Texas and most of the south. While the summer is far from ideal (anything over 70 degrees is less than ideal in my book) it could be a helluva lot worse like in parts of Texas, Alabama, Florida, etc. You just have to run in it and experience it to understand how bad it really is.
Also, these posters who throwing out figures like "95 degrees with 90% humidity" are all full of s$%#. A lot of hyperbole on this thread.
it's hot but not that hot
