Actually, they DO know how much they should be drinking. And they were drinking just that much. The problem was, that the conditions dictated that they should be drinking more than is normal. More than the race directors had planned for. So they ran out.

It is NOT their job to "help out" the runners later in the race. And that is moot anyway because they have NO WAY OF KNOWING that the race directors screwed up and that the water stops are not going to have enough water later on. Did you expect them to count water bottles as they went by?

No, of course not. In fact, you should run fast because then the apparent wind blowing on you will be greater and thus you'll feel cooler. I recommend speeding up to 35-40 MPH for maximum cooling.

Bungle the finish line...Wasn't that the Lakeshore Marathon in '05? All that happened at the big Chi '06 was the winner (?) banged his head at the end. What am I forgetting?

There are so many factors pointing to what happened, but this is for certain............ the front runners have ABSOLUTELY NO OBLIGATION for even thinking about or knowing what's going on behind them!! I don't think anybody was wasting anything - dumping stuff out on the street unused - people were using more than usual because it was hotter than usual and there was an announcement before the start that there had been more fluids brought.

This is a running race for crying out loud, so while the walkers/joggers are slowly trotting, call people on their cell-phones, and holding hands while singing "Kum-By-Ya", at least you could respect the front runners that are somehow running triple the miles to properly prepare for the same race - they should never have to accommodate anything except their mission to run as fast as they can - it's a running race, not a tea party!!!!

Another thing, everybody is talking about this marathon like it was the civil war with dead bodies being thrown everywhere and aliens about to bomb the sears tower. 1 person died, but of his heart condition, not the heat. Around 300 (1.2%) people were treated on the spot for fatigue and a hand full went to the hospital (0.2% - 0.3%) for doing something they'd been planning on doing for months in conditions known to them for days.

There are so many marathons over the United States - you can run your 5-9 hour "efforts" elsewhere - TIME CUTOFFS PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! It's pretty evident that money is playing the biggest power role here!

Do you really think you would have as much sponsorship if you didn't have as many entrants. All of them getting bombarded with ads. The fact that so many run it, or are involved only increases the amount of sponsors and the money they are willing to offer.

I've run in marathons hotter than Chicago's. Look it up - 1986 Pittsburgh - 85 degrees at the start! It was reported to be over 95 degrees by the time anyone under 3 hours finished. No one sued!

Boston was hotter than this 2 or 3 years ago , what about the year Salazar ran his promised 2:09 in NYC in the early 80's? It was hotter than 80 degrees. But did he want to sue??

rick s shows real moderation and consideration in his assessment. The runners do have a responsibility, to themselves. Every year a majority of runners get to enter a marathon they are unprepared for. Why does the Chicago Marathon advertise that runners need to sign up early because they "limit," the race to 45,000? They limit it because that is all they can accomodate. And by accomodate do they mean get across the line or handle logistically or do they mean race safely? Kona's ironman requires qualification.SVC, you would do well to consider some of the other posts like rick s'. A preexisting heart condition in no way frees the race organizers from their responsibility to conduct a safe race.It's tough to break away from one's destiny and it would be difficult to have a race even 100 yards for 45,000 people and not have some troubles, statistically. Certainly the organizers acted intelligently in cancelling the race. Isn't this the surest sign they were concerned about their own lack of preparedness? "Lots of people suffering from the heat and we didn't have adequate water at the first three stops we better bail!" Call in the police and bring everybody home.Sometimes runners in a race overdo it, it is a race afterall. Todd Williams, one of the best conditioned runners in America passed out cold in a race. The marathon had set up aid stations on the course and at the finish. But apparently the stations were not prepared for the "limited" number of runners the organizers allowed to enter.

Bary - that's exactly what I'd expect some slow so-called "marathoner" would reply with - in your little mind, you think there are two kinds of runners - the ones on the front page that run under 2:10:00 (mostly African) and then the rest of everybody - we're all the same right, running a marathon together? You think everybody that "sounds" serious thinks they deserve money. I could get a crap about winning any money, that's not what I do for a living - I run 80-100 miles/week before and after work to train hard and smart and fast for something I love and am good at. I'm talking about people like you that have no clue of what they're doing waddling to a 4:00:00 and thinking you're some great runner in your community because you can physically get through 26.2 miles while you couldn't even run one mile at my marathon pace - yet you think we're in the same class.

Everybody thinks they're cut out for a marathon - if you train really hard and really smart and still can't run under 3:00:00, then it's clear that you aren't good at it, it's not for you, but don't run 4 miles every other day and think you were born to fulfill this God-given goal of being "Mr. Marathon" and try to impress your family and friends with your desire to do something huge.

I'd love to see someone who actually ran the race post what entrants actually signed as far as a liability waiver. I did competitive sailboat racing for years, and we always had to sign waivers for the big regattas. You couldn't participate w/o signing one.
