Canadiens in the 13th grade should not count.
8:00 is great as a high schooler. Lots of other 19-year old freshman have done it.
Anderson ran 8:10.55 in grade 12; equivalent to senior in the states. Ian clark ran 8:04 for 3000 when he was in grade 12.
Hard to top Ryan's record although single performance has to go to webb and his 3:53 mile. THat is a 3:36 1500; for a high schooler.

In high school, Nelson went by 3K in 7:58 in a 2 mile.
He must have really died that last 200 then.
In his record if he goes through 3000 in 8:05 and kicks a 28 it puts him around 8:36 for 2 miles. a 32 means he would have gone through in 8:01.
My bad, July 25, 1964. Sometimes all the neurons don't connect... but it still doesn't change the fact that Ryun and Lindgren are the two greatest high school distance runners ever.
Or he was shoved into the infield.
That's interesting. I never knew Nelson lost 4-5 seconds over the last 200 in his record race by getting shoved into the infield. You would have thought TNF News would have mentioned this in their article covering the race.
I've also read that he was shoved by an older jealous runner. Keep in mind when figuring splits that there is 218.6 meters from 3k to 2miles. I believe his mile splits were 4:20, 4:16. So while he did probably die a bit in the final 200, he was flying that last mile.
obviously aj acosta
Why is everyone ignoring Craig Virgin? This is a guy who dominated as a high schooler, collegiate, and professional athlete. He was #1 on all 3 levels. I say the most complete career than any other...Pre died to young, Gerry overachieved and fell short as a pro,
read the question. it is High School.

I doubt Julio beat the White Plains guys- Otis Hill or Larry James( or Carl Reed for that matter) at anything under a half. They all split 48.0 or better.
I think Meade was a great talent but NYC area was hot hot hot at every thing from 220 to 880 those years. I actually think Otis Hill was better than James in HS but both were 21 flat sub 47 guys 40 years ago.
When Gerry beat them soviets it was like miracle except noone liked running as much as hockey, but he was a skimpy teen and he beat ze bieg soviet men and proved that americans arent lazy if it werent for him we would not be a country today, cold war would = loss
I still have to agree with the choice of Ted Meredith of Mercersburg Academy, who won the 1912 Olympic 800 meter race in 1:51.9 (world record), finished fourth in the 400 meters in 49.2 (48.8 in the semis), and ran a leg on the winning world record setting 4x400 relay (3:16.6) -- all on cinders, of course. He was, however, 20 years old in the summer of 1912.

sorry, Ted is DQ'd if he was a 20 year old high school senior. I was a sophmore in college when I turned 20. I ran 20 seconds faster in the mile at age 20 then I did at 18 and could have beaten 98% of high schoolers when I was 20; so, NO, Ted is DQ'd. (but a huge talent for his day, none the less)
after 7 pages i dont see this question getting a definitive answer, how about a change in direction and discussing the question in terms of females. nicole blood and melody fairchild come to mind

Julio Meade did, in fact, beat Otis Hill every time he faced him when they were both seniors in 1966, including at the prestigious Golden West Invitational that spring, clocking 46.8 for 440 yards.

Julio's range ran from 60 yards to 2.5 miles at Van Cortlandt.
He ran the opening leg in the historic 2 mile relay record set in 1965. At Van Cortandt he ran in the 13:25 range. In high school he was faster than his teammate Vince Mathews and White Plains star Larry James.
I agree. I saw Julio compete; he just got burned out at Kansas, running multiple events in meets. An incredible talent: 9.5 100, 20.4 220, 46.8 440 as a senior in H.S. (this is before the U.S. adopted the metric system, so this is all in yards). But that relay was run in 1966.
It's amazing that Americans don't hold any junior records in the distance events, yet they're the only runners in the discussion for greatest high school runners. I realize that "junior" isn't necessarily synonymous with "high school" and that some of the junior records were set by guys who were no longer in high school, but it's a little odd that no one seems to think that there are any Africans who belong in the discussion.
