I missed a few days - so catching up here a bit.
Matt Vavla - I know the name, just can't place the school?
(probably West if Terry Coach was your coach)
Terry Couch actually was a teacher all along - he help recruit me to college on my visit (he has been a Middle school teacher - so some of his runners in high school and summer may not have realized that).
As for Wyco Loco - incredible track knowledge and stats! and he is right about (if you are not a teacher getting a coaching job) is tough - especially in Wichita. For some reason, AD's and current Head coaches have a real hard time understading how to build programs these days, having little clue about what makes a good coach. Most would rather keep a totally ineffective coach or if looking for someone new - hire someone who will bow to their politics, than actually coach. that is one big reason for the wasted talent in so many schools across our great state.
I was just looking at the program for WSU coaches clininc (I attended a few years ago)...by the way WSU coaching staff is excellent - so this is not a knock on them, but some where in that clinic they needed to explain to many of these high school coaches how track works: 1) how to build a program/get kids out, 2) how to score points (as in only the last 3 meets counts = which some many football/track coaches still don't seem to understand (as evidence by their putting distance kids in 4 events for 40 pts every meeet of the season), 3) to how to enter your studs for maximum points (when it comes to relays vs. open events).
The list of old great coaches was good. My brother went to Fort Hays during some of their glory days.
In researching top Kansas milers I just looked at those 1979 state 2 mile results - and was impressed by the list of winners grade trainer mentionded.
I would really like to see - or try to make a list of top Kansas runners (for road races 2mile-Marathon) The Kansas road race record book only included races within the state boarders...while most of us ran our fastest time outside the state. Any ideas of how to begin a list like that - or where to begin looking?
