Coe: Talk about Stahr and Irish

I was a soccer coach for my daughter's team a couple of years ago and wouldn't allow the parents to go nuts on the kids... "... The objective is to have fun right now... They have plenty of time to win games later..." - It was crazy how many times parents needed this type of reality check...

OK, here's what I dug up ....

actually, 2nd place in that race was Santa Monica TC in 7:10.03 without Johnny Gray

Handelsman was not American (I think he was from Israel) so that does not appear on the all-time US list

3rd was Bud Light at 7:10.14

James Mays 1:45.7

Chicago Track Club ran 7:08.0 over two miles in Durham, N.C., on May 12, 1973, with four Americans - Tom Bach (1:50.5), Ken Sparks (1:47.1), Lowell Paul (1:48.0) and Rick Wohlhuter (1:44.8)

ASU's time was listed as American record until 1986 (when Santa Monica ran 7:06.5 at Mt. SAC), although 3200m is shorter than 2M, which I don't quite get. any stat gurus aruond??

Wow, Lagsun, great names from the past. Dwight "Woody" Woodruff ran at Annapolis from 83 to 87. Great guy. It would be very interesting to know what he's doing now, as I have not seen him since '87. His best race at Navy that I recall was an indoor 3000, that he ran in a dual meet in about 8:07, effortless. Amazing runner.

That would make sense, but my dusty 1985 U.S. T&F annual lists ASU's 7:08.96 under both American Records and American Collegiate Records.

From a few pages earlier: I believe Merrick Jones started at Mohawk CC, then transfered to Syracuse for his final 2 years when coach Dick Coleman took the helm there in 1986.

I'm surprised noone has mentioned Franklin Academy's(Malone) Marc Gosselin. He was an awesome runner. I talked to him a few times after a race, and he seemed like a really nice guy, too. I think he went to St. Lawrence University, which had an awesome program back then.

Much has been written about the 4x800 and rightly so, but I didn't see anything (it is a long thread, so I might have missed it) about the DMR at the Penn Relays in'87 that Mike and Miles were on. The time of 9:20.86 was at the time a world best and American, Collegiate, and Penn Relays record. Besides Mike and Miles, it included Darron Outler and John Trautmann.

top three finishers broke the existing world record (9:22.6, Arkansas, from 1986 Penns), with Stahr anchoring in 3:54.9 and Gerry O'Reilly with 3:55.3 for Villanova, which ran 9:21.03. Mount St. Mary's was third in 9:21.67.

I found out that it was an AR for 4x800. The other record was a 2 Mile relay record.

I got out my copy of the June 1987 Track and Field News and there on p.8 is Mike outleaning O'Reilly at the finish. It is under a heading "Medley Runners Go Bonkers." The splits for the Hoyas were John Trautmann 2:53.1, Darron Outler 46.9, Miles Irish 1:46.1,

In looking at my June 1987 copy of T&F News, I see that they have a picture of Mike outleaning O'Reilly at the finish of the DMR. The picture in under the story "Medley Runners Go Bonkers." The splits for the Hoyas were John Trautmann 2:53.1, Darren Outler 46.9, Miles Irish 1:46.1, and Mike Stahr 3:54.9. The Hoyas were quite a bit behind on the anchor leg, but Mike, who T&F News said "Revitalized prep star Mike Stahr was now within striking distance" after Miles Irish's 800 leg. They concluded that "Simply put, it may well have been the greatest race in the history of 93 runnings of the (Penn) Relays."

I was there! It was a great race. Everyone was going nuts watching the end of the final lap. I've seen a couple of races of Mike and he was an impressive runner.

I'll add that that 1987 Penn DMR was probably one of the greatest races I've ever seen. Up there with the 89 Penn DMR and the 96 Olympic 10k.

Stahr's anchor was clutch but I think the loudest response from the crowd came from Miles Irish's 800 leg to get them back in the race. Troutmann's 2:54 was awesome for a freshman but couldn't touch the Mount St. Mary's lead-off leg which had to have been 2:49-2:50.

Check that -2:53 for Trautmann. And he had to have been in 4th place with that.

One question Mister Stahr: Would two miles be longer or shorter than 3200?

Question for Mr. Malmo..Sir, isn't that like listing Ritz as the HS 3200M record holder??..some kids still don't get that laugher... Hey just kidding ..I got it..

I never understood why the record keepers don't always go with the superior standard when the two distances are so similar. That's why in Ohio the h.s. record for 3200 is 8:46 by Ricky Pittman, and there is no mention any where in the books of Alan Scharsu's 8:43 for 2 miles, clearly the better time.

the 3200 relays vs. 2 mile relays is a common one where the old records get "forgotten".

But getting back to that awesome 1987 Penn DMR, does anyone recall Roddie Haley's 400 split? THAT was something!

And a question for Mike Stahr, where were you at NCAA's that year. Injured perhaps? It would have been the year Abdi Bile won in 3:35, and then later that summer won the World Championships 1500.
