I’ll
announce this upfront…this will probably end up being longer than
intended. The topic is diet, my workout and supplements. If you aren’t
interested, please don’t waste your time. I can promise there will be
nothing earth shattering or revolutionary here.
However,
I get asked often about diet, my workout routine and the supplements I
take? Here is a quick run down (see the photo attached) of what I take
each morning in terms of supplements. It includes a variety, most of
which I get from Complete Nutrition (get a hold of Jason Harms at the
Eugene story for guidance); a multi-vitamin, calcium, glucosamine, fish
oil, fat burner, natural test booster, milk thistle, etc. In regard to
supplements I don’t believe there is such a thing as a “magic pill”, I
take all of this to hopefully help myself perform at a high level in
life and feel good doing it. The goal of “feeling good” doesn’t really
go hand in hand with reality because in regard to my workout program I
never feel satisfied at the end of the day unless I am totally spent.
This is a good segue…just because I do something, eat something, don’t
eat something, etc. doesn’t mean you should emulate. I am not telling
anyone what they should or shouldn’t do, I am simply sharing what I do.
I am not a nutritionist, sports psychologist, trainer, or coach I am a
bowhunter. Period.
This fact
that I am not satisfied with each day unless I am physically beat down,
will probably be one big difference between me and most. There is
nothing wrong with not being 100% spent at the end of the day, people
ask about my approach, so I am sharing. What that means for me is that I
need to run multiple hard miles, lift weights and shoot my bow each
day. I’ve never felt gifted at anything other than having a lot of drive
and an affinity to endurance, so I ride these strengths and hope it
pays off? My goal isn’t to be the strongest in the world, the fastest or
the best shot, it is to be the best I can be, compared against just me.
I don’t care what anyone else does and don’t compare myself to anyone
else. Everyone has different goals in life, are motivated by different
things and sacrifice for different reasons. That is o.k..
For
a little history, years ago, 2005-2010, my workout looked a lot
different. I weighed about 155-160# and was motivated by the challenge
of 100 mile ultramarathons to help me prepare for bowhunting the
mountains. I wanted discipline in my life and to develop a higher degree
of mental toughness. I was running 20 miles a day, 100+ miles a week,
every week. My diet sucked however, so while I could run for hours,
that’s about all I could do. My strength was way down. I might have been
able to bench press 225# one time, now I can do it 10-15 times any day
of the week. Being stronger with the endurance I’ve earn each day (and
yeah, you have to earn it because it goes away) feels better. Oh, and in
addition to running 20 miles a day, I’d shoot my bow. That part has
never changed. And, yes, I did conquer a couple 100 mile ultra
marathons, my fastest being in 22 hours and 41 minutes at Western
States. Now I run 6-10 miles a day instead of 20 and while I don’t
workout for any less time, I use the time previously spent running, to
lift weights. And, I eat a lot better.
Diet
has more to do with body composition/change than anyone’s workout ever
will in my opinion. My personal diet is designed for performance. I eat
lots of complex carbs early in the day for fuel, no carbs after 6:00
p.m. (want to stay lean) and protein all day, 300 grams total each day
(meat, nuts, protein drink, Qwest bars, etc.) to help me retain muscle
despite all the intense muscle robbing cardio I do. While I rarely
misstep, 99.9% of the time I also don’t eat dairy, sugar or consume
alcohol. I consume things that will help me get stronger, faster and
tougher. Dairy, sugar and alcohol will not make you better at any of
those. Bottom line, I eat clean and live clean.
