It just comes down to money and maybe even location.
Kids get a different feel about different campuses: My son, not an athlete, could have gone to Cornell for $3000 a year. He hated the campus. I love the campus and the town (Ithaca) I go there often. It wasn't for him.
Then there is their intended major. For my son, RIT was far more expensive but Cornell would have had a different route to the same major and RIT's was better suited to him.
Then, and this is Cornell only, you have to take a swimming test and if you don't pass you have to take a swimming class!! He hates swimming.
The test at least was: 50 meters freestyle, 50 meters backstroke, 50 meters any way you can get to the end.
