Did Semling just give up his MN high school eligibility by running unattached in a coolege race this weekend? What are the MSHSL rules on this? I didn't think high schoolers could race outside of a certain distance, nor could they race in college races.
I checked the rule - if the track event is not offered by the MSHSL, it's fair game to run. You could travel/compete against collegiate athletes in the 5k/10k and for sure not lose eligibility. The way I'm reading the rule you could do the steeple/3k/1500/1609/400 hurdles/1k/600/etc. too since those are not MSHSL events. The 1k thing is XC only.
That is really interesting - for someone like Erik I could see him doing more of that next year. It gets around the Minnesota no-travel rule, gives real competition, etc.
I believe you could even do 6k/8k XC races unattached with how I'm interpreting the rules. Would be interesting to see some high school kids race against collegiate fields early if they're not getting enough competition.
I'd be looking at this as a legitimate alternative if I have a kid at the top of distance running. You can find a lot of collegiate races even in Minnesota that would be competitive for top HS kids.

It has been interesting from an Indoor meet perspective to see that some colleges will allow high school competitors like Bethel, Mankato and Concordia, while others St. Olaf, the U of M, and Carleton won't consider it. I'd think that would be a window into recruiting and showing off their campuses and facilities.
Totally agree - I would be using it as an opportunity to find potential recruits. Anyone willing to travel to a collegiate meet as a high schooler is for sure looking at running in college.
Awesome run from Semling as a sophomore going 8:54. Lot of respect for Sean trying to double and leading most of the race. Good to see Emery Wirth go for it as well!
They won’t be racing each other at the state meet, since Fries is in Class AAA, Wirth is in Class AA, and Semling is in Class A

It is still a work in progress with a lot more pages I want to add down the road, but really excited to get this out here and continue to promote MN high school distance running.

I think North Carolina is a curse for Minnesota runners. Both Brecker and Mechura went there and have not been running. I don't know if they're hurt or what, but it's disappointing for sure
Yes it is, Breker has barely worn the UNC jersey. Qualified for U20 xc a few years back with Aidan Jones (during his redshirt year I believe), then ran 4 races last outdoor season. Might have gotten injured again before conference 10k though?
Also Mechura was listed on the regions and nationals lists, but didn't run anything this fall. Wondering if he was close to being ready, but not quite there? Hoping someone can provide some insight on these two. Hope we see them soon in indoor and/or outdoor
Seems like that U20 was Breker’s only XC race during his college years so far. He did run in some track races though, including this year’s Virginia Challenge

That's really unfortunate to hear. I was counting on a rematch of the Hamline race at State in the 1600, along with seeing how Fries, Stuwe, and Flippen would match-up in the 3200 as they have not raced together in that event yet. Hope he heals up fully and has no lingering affects moving forward. He should be the top ranked runner in AAA going into next season.
