Stuff like WWE has the doping but it's popular because of all the BS melodrama, not because it's an actual athletic competition. Nobody cares about actual wrestling even at the Olympics.
I can't imagine anyone wanting to watch a doped up Fred Kerley race other doped up losers in a straight race or anyone paying much for broadcasting or sponsorship rights.
The point isn't for it to be financially viable. The point is to test human limits and free competitive format is one of the best ways to do that.
Free market and win-win exchange between the participants and the guys giving them resources.
