Yeah it’s not true you can look at the data. Young people are having less sex than before. There’s maybe a few % living the hookup life in big cities.
It’s just cope from young people being too shy to date. Not that all dating moving online is good - it’s just not some weird manosphere “chads taking all the women” thing. (If you still legitimately feel this is the case, you should go get a college degree. That’s the strongest correlate with getting happily married right now)
There's a simple explanation.
If you're poor or lower-middle class, you'll be too busy and/or broke to date. Why bother dating when you're physically and mentally exhausted from working 2-3 jobs just to pay off your loans and live in a tiny apartment in a crappy part of town?
If you're rich or upper-middle class, there are plenty of life options and hobbies you can indulge in without being tied down to anyone or having to consider another person's needs. Backpack around Europe and/or Asia for a few years, chase your dreams and move to Hollywood, NYC, or Flagstaff for a while, go on vacations every month, buy luxury cars, boats, and vacation homes, and so on.
None of this was true in the "old days". Housing was affordable, most people never left their home state, and entertainment was pretty much a tiny CRT TV that had maybe 3-4 channels and antennas that had to be frequently adjusted.
