I think a lot of people, myself included started paying attention last year when he was the best in HS as a freshman running 1:47, outkicking everyone at Brooks PR. His run indoor was awesome and after that Granville's record was on borrowed time. Then no surprise when he's the best in the nation again and knocks down the record by a big chunk. I was stoked he made the final. But wow. I didn't think this kid could surprise me anymore, I thought I knew the talent level we were dealing with. Nope. I'm too young to have been following the sport for Alan Webb's 3:53 and my parents were still kids when Ryun was running but I would struggle to believe either of them were as amazing as this kid. Maybe Ryun, someone with better perspective can weigh in. I quoted the post with the splits because Cooper has just been racing so damn well! Even his high school races he looks so easy closing out with his best splits and running people down. Closing like that in a 1:42 race going after the best US field ever assembled at 16?!?! I've re-watched this race a few times just to try to comprehend it. Poor Brazier! He makes this amazing comeback, wins the damn race, and it still isn't the most interesting thing to happen.
