I think Wiley is more than a contender, she's the favorite for USAs right now.
Tactically, I thought she ran much better today than she has been. She was patient on the first lap and made sure she saved something for the last 150m. I wouldn't call it great tactics though. She was right behind Hunter Bell with about 120m to go but panicked a bit and went wide around Maloney. Hunter Bell was also boxed at that point but was more patient. She waited in the home straight and wound up running less distance/using less energy than Wiley.
To be fair to Wiley though, she was in a tough spot. Maloney was struggling the last 200 but there wasn't really a great window to pass her. I understand why she felt she needed to go wide but I think you saw the difference between Wiley and Hunter Bell today -- Hunter Bell is fitter and a bit more patient.
I'll give WIley a pass there. Maloney was just hanging in that spot off the front of her shoulder FOREVER. Hunter Bell didn't have that same view. Easy to think Maloney is never gonna get out of the way. You wait one second too long, and somebody can make a move to get away before you have a chance to respond.
I'm sure Wiley's relieved that you'll give her a pass
My only issue with Wiley being the favorite is her relative inconsistency, especially when it REALLY counts. She's run some great races - but hasn't really put it together on the big stage.
Yes to the rest though. The patience is what counts to me - I respect her for always running brave but learning how to sit back is important as well.
When has she been inconsistent? World Indoor team, World Road Race Team, World U20 Team, gold at NACAC U23. She's only 21 ... she is younger than all of the collegiate runners like Rose, Paige, Hunter. She was injured at the Trials last year and her not running well at USATF Indoors this year was completely understandable. She now has two 2nds and two 3rds at Daimond League events.

you do realize this is a thread for commenting on the races, right?
I’m almost convinced that Tsegay is an unofficial pacemaker. Why does she go out in 59?
To me, the only rational reason would be to see how she can respond on the bell lap after zapping her legs early? Surprisingly was able to hold off Hull! Really weird pacing but hey it worked -- 4:11.89 for #2 ever

Great practice for Hull as Tsegay always takes the race out! Sinclair Johnson - not bad!!!
Surely she would’ve run 2 seconds faster pacing that better. 2 seconds slower than Kipyegon over 1500 but 4 over the mile. Either way a really ballsy effort
