I'm not saying it was a 100% effort, he did ease up in the last 2-3 meters, but a slight misstep from Jakob on that final turn (e.g. stumbling a bit and losing a fraction of his momentum, which is possible on the sharp turns of an indoor track) and he loses.
It is even more clear rewatching the race video that Jakob was cruising for 150m after a failed attempt to take the lead at the bell, to then relaunch an attack to overtake in the home straight for the win.
He even said in his post-race interview with JG, "had I been in the lead I would have been running faster," but he knew he could beat Aregawi in a sprint finish based on previous encounters.

I don't think snowflakes said he did this intentionally to spook Aregawi, but as a result of the move, it spooked Aregawi to surge to the point he was running all out, while Jakob enacted Plan B.

You should own what you say before claiming something else. No, he didn't have to access his top gear. He simply outlasted Aregawi who he spooked by trying to get to the lead. Aregawi's final 100m was 13.6, Jakob realized this and passed him at the end without going into top gear. Top gear for him looks like around 12.8x 100m.

When I said that his plan was to wait for the final 50, I meant after he had put in a surge to pass Aregawi not before. It would have been a waste of energy to attempt to pass him with 150 to go and he guessed correctly because Aregawi was slowing down at that point. He only needed a 13.3 for the win which was precisely the effort needed to win today. He wants to save energy for tomorrow.

Jakob was intentionally waiting for the final 50, Aregawi was flying in the homestraight but Jakob knew he would slow down. People thinking that he was struggling are crazy. Also, Aregawi is a 7:21 3000m runner, nothing to be ashamed about.
He clearly tried (quite hard) to pass Aregawi on the home stretch with a lap to go. If you can't see this you should get your eyes checked.

Yes I agree it is dependent. For Jakob today, the highest gear neccessary was 26.6-26.7 for the final 200m. He could have finished much faster but it just wasn't necessary since he has a race tomorrow.

Jakob is highly inscrutable as a runner though. If you look at photos or videos of him losing championship races, he typically doesn’t appear to be straining there either.

That's true. I don't think it looked like Jakob had to use his max gear, but it's also hard to tell since he pretty much never looks strained in a race.
