So one race 3 years ago defines Cheptegei's level? Taking such a limited example we could say the same about the 1500 in Paris for Ingebrigtsen. What a loser.
Tell us again that Jakob ran 63 minutes for the half. Did you just copy/paste this from someone who responded to you?
It's you who's just telling us that again. You don't have any problem with those who keep repeating Cheptegei's finishing 9th 3 years ago, as though that sums up his ability. Referring to Ingebrigtsen's HM is just as definitive. Or his 4th in Paris - as I did above.

Running the HM for Ingebrigtsen wasn't a "fun challenge"
Yes it was. Your opinion doesn't change that.
I'm not sure he thought it was "fun" by the finish line. It was also a humiliation. He had boasted the HM is his "best distance". The Olympic 1500 champion was reduced to a walk before the half way mark.

In order for it to be a humiliation, Jakob would have had to feel humiliated. He didn't.

No, he didn't need to feel that. It is a fair assessment of the outcome. He had described it as his "best distance" and yet he was done after 10k, reduced to a walk and finished 39th.

On the contrary - we are on the same page. You are right that anyone who takes a limited example of one race to define an athlete's level must be a loser.

Shoot for the moon and even if you miss you’ll land among the stars!!
You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.
Jakob blew up in his HM debut but still managed to set the Norwegian 10K road record and set the Ingebrigtsen Family HM Record.
It makes perfect sense when you remember that the last time Cheptegei bothered to show up for a global 5k final, in 2022, he finished 9th (ninth).

Yes, it's a limited example, since Cheptegei has only run three global 5k finals, where he's finished first, 8th and 9th. How do you propose that we should judge him over a distance he doesn't feel like competing in more than once every 4 or so years?

12:35 wr as against 12:48. Also happens to be the world's best 10k runner. I don't think I would write him off yet over the shorter distance in which he has the wr.

Are we allowed to take this back to the person in the thread topic now, Armstronglivs, or do you feel like you have more you need to share about that other runner?

Cheptegei still has potential. Besides the World Records in the 5000m and 10000m, he ran 59:21 HM Cheptegei in 2020.
All of these performances can be improved with the right training for a race in the right conditions.

Comparing Cheptegei's effort with that of another athlete who claims he wants the marathon wr is a fair comparison. Cheptegei is doing quite a bit better, even if it isn't his "best distance". If you want to "take the thread back" you and others might choose not to continually dispute that.
