They can. In California the issue is that there are hundreds of thousands of unemployed, but two things are keeping them from working:
1. They get paid by the government to hang out and do drugs.
2. The minimum wage is $20/hour and they aren't worth that amount.
It isn't happenstance that these perverse incentives exist or that the bottom rungs of the ladder have been obliterated. It is by design so that cronies can bilk taxpayers to keep these people suffering in poverty.

Actually I have a degree from a top-10 college, ran a small business for around 12 years and now I'm starting my own business. The only person I live with is my wife.
The neighborhood I live in is full of $1m-$4m homes. Mind you when I moved here they were a fraction of that, there were virtually no bums, there wasn't graffiti everywhere, and every second shopfront on the high street wasn't vacant. Of course part of the uptick in value is that Chinese folks are buying up houses as investments and deep-pocketed speculators are tearing down all of the original 1940s homes and building the cheapest largest things they can put on the lot for a quick buck.
With any luck I'll be on a farm within five years, and able to grow my own food. Though there is massive land use red tape in California when it comes to agricultural land and it takes some navigating. If I can't figure it out will need to start looking out of state.

I guess I blame him for doing that. But not for the systematic bad incentives caused by the adoption of Keynesian economics -- which happened mostly before he was born.

They may bust unions. That being said, their worst crime is having a low-quality product -- both the coffee and the experience, both for customers and employees. I ran a coffee shop when I was in school. Serving the customers was a joy. Working with my colleagues was a joy. And part of what made it fun was operating the equipment, which required some practice and finesse. Starbucks has dumbed down their process to the point where it is basically reading screens and pushing buttons. Not sure what the point is of having people in there at all, let alone unionized people. It is a sub-human system on both sides of the counter. Half of the customers don't even talk to an employee, they just order online.
So strange that we live in a time and place where folks will dish out $3-$5 for a crappy cup of coffee instead of making a better one at home for probably $0.50. I'd understand going out for coffee at a neighborhood cafe where you can interact with locals and employees, but most of the new Starbucks these days are being built as "drive thru" so there is absolutely no value as far as public space is concerned -- except as a place for bums to congregate and monopolize the toilets, which was one of the factors in their pulling out.

But he is hardly the first politician to lie or to cheat or to exaggerate.
He may have more mental, emotional, and moral handicaps than most (except possibly George Santos), but that is no reason that he cannot still accomplish some simpler tasks.
In fact, I think he is accomplishing significant steps in terms of changing the perception of whether the US welcome immigrants or refugees. I realize this is a complicated issues, and I understand there is anger about us blocking political refugees, but I think perception is an important part of altering how many people head north from Venezuela, for example.
