That’s a good article. She ran a 5:15 mile when she was 12, just to beat her dad. That’s actually insane, considering she wasn’t even a competitive runner at that age.
I thought that Runner's World article was interesting for the repeated mentions of how bright Valby is, and insightful. Are they pushing against some belief that she's just a ditzy blond, for marketing purposes? Hints of that belief have certainly appeared here after some of her post-race interviews.
When I read that I thought of the 2022 XC nationals where Tuohy ran her down and how much that must have really spurred her to level up like she did. The clip of Tuohy passing her just kept playing on SM sites. For someone who is intensely competitive it had to light a fire. She came back the next year a different runner.
I agree. You can get into amazing shape but then get hammered in the last lap by those with faster speed. Parker has zero ability to switch gears and sprint.
She will after training with the best collective team of womens 1500 runners in the country. That is exactly what she is about to get really good at!
Really, is that how you overcome what mother nature has given you? By osmosis?
If that is true, why didn't everyone train with Usain Bolt?

Being a college junior and not knowing what a tangent is was the first time I thought this. Then the phone scammer that got her to wire $20,000. Even with that article I am having a hard time thinking of her as not a little ditzy. I think her dad may be helping her come across differently. If her negotiates contracts for a living he will know all about image and being aware of the cues you send out.
Last spring when she ran that race hanging out in the pack laughing and waving to the crowd and coming off as somewhat obnoxious I noticed that the next race she was different. We never saw that kind of thing again. Someone helps her with this stuff.
common sense and intelligence are two different things. from what I understand she did pretty well academically. even got "Women’s Scholar Athlete of the Year" in her final year.
The main reason Paker is getting a big contract is because is marketing. Her look sells, her running while an Olympic athlete in the US she's no Monson, if you get my drift.
I can tell you from personal experience that you can get what you need from altitude with three four week bouts per year. And from what I know, the NB Boston group does just that.
NB released a video before the trials of them training in Flagstaff at Lumberjack Stadium. think they said they were there for a month. they went right from Flagstaff to Oregon for the trials. looks like it worked out just fine.
I wonder how thoroughly pros vet a supershoe before signing with a new brand. It's more important than ever, given the different responsiveness people have to different brands. Obviously the training shoes must work okay, but for racing it's all about the supershoe. Parker has done well with Vaporflys and it's not like she has been able to race publicly in New Balance. Presumably one would do time trial style reps with each shoe and make sure they really work okay, but I wonder how many just do a quick hard run and are like "yeah, seems fine" and then find out later they are losing seconds per mile when racing.
They basically made and sell a supershoe made to Emily Sisson's specs/desire. If she's good, I'd guess she'll have the shoe she needs.

Ahhh, you mean the old "what's a tangent" thingamabob? We're way past that, now we're getting the feeling that she was just playing us.
I got a lot of NB stuff through a local sponsorship and everything lasted a long time. One pair of shorts, which were great for running and swimming both, finally had to go because I tore a hole in the seat from hopping over a rusty chain link fence to get away from two pitbulls. The shoes have lasted me 2-3k miles per year. Nikes from a previous local sponsorship I found to be very hit or miss, the structure triax among the shoes that were the most uncomfortable I have ever had, while the lunar trainers lasted 3k miles and were awesome. The Nike shorts all had the pockets in exactly the wrong places. The watch was useful but the battery died pretty quickly. I still love the running hat, which is good down to the 20s.
