Newsweek reports the family had Trump signs in the yard. My theory: he got into an argument with his dad about some random thing and this was his way to get back at him.
Not political, not DEI, not attention. Just another disturbed kid with easy access to guns and nowhere to go.
It was probably some self hate (young white man led path through far left). I have seen those online nutjobs that say “kill fascism” or whatever and as corny as it sounds they view anti immigration and right wing as fascism. The extremist nut jobs read those messages and take them to heart, some probably have violence on their mind. Extremism is bad on all sides. We as White men also need to to something about our young men (20 something year olds) who engage in extremist politics. It is extremely unhealthy and we are the demographic that suffers to most from it. This young man won some math scholarship when he graduated in 2022 and was a good student with a future.

Nobody knows why the kid shot Trump. The kid is dead. You attempting to blame the left is ridiculous. He was a Republican raised by Republicans. Maybe it was his home life. Quit trying to twist it into something it isn’t.
Do you have a link to where his parents are Republicans? Legitimately asking. I thought his dad was a psychologist and mother a social worker or something similar.
Anyway, I've posted this elsewhere, but I doubt his motivations are going to make sense to anyone. Everyone is trying to interpret it through a political lens, but these crazed shooter types just get it in their head to kill someone and they just go ahead and do it. The "reasoning" behind it is probably beyond his own understanding if he were alive.
From a simple google search, some news articles have the mom as a registered democrat, father as a registered libertarian, and sister as a registered republican.
Doesn't mean that they vote that way in general elections, just tells you what primary they can vote in.

Maybe he considered Trump ‘America’s Hitler’ or something radical like that?

Yeah, I wonder where he would have heard that Trump could be "America's Hitler." Gotta think on that for awhile.
As for all the crap about "the left" and the media normalizing violence in politics; How many political advertisements can I link to that feature politicians carrying and firing high powered rifles? And how many of those would feature Democrats?
The answers are "a lot" and "probably zero or close to it."
The "I'm ready to shoot things/people and you should be too" is regularly a Republican message to viewers.

Yes it was very rude of JD Vance to suggest that Trump could be America's Hitler!
yes the fear-mongering media put the gun in his hand
He was a registered republican, a Trump supporter and fan of a far-right youtube channel. What could have happened in the days/weeks leading up to the rally that might have caused him to turn on Dear Leader?

Trump is an obnoxious blowhard but actually has a good heart and was an excellent president. Joe Biden is a likable corrupt grifter who doesn't give a krap about middle class Americans and is more concerned with nonsense like DEI and global warming...I'll take Trump..

Yes, his good heart just grabs ‘em by the pussycat. When you are a star, they let you do it.

Motivation: MAKE A NAME FOR HIMSELF. TO MATTER, FOR ONCE.
This is the classic lone-wolf, right wing extremist, gun nut that law enforcement has warned us about for years.
He was a Republican
He was into guns and gun videos (note the t-shirt)
His high school classmates describe him as definitely a conservative
He is described as relentlessly bullied.
(He did NOT donate $15 to ActBlue)
Let's accept that the right wing has been correct about something: We have a problem with mental illness. They say it is mental illness, not guns. I'd counter that it is the combination of mental illness with easy access to guns, a lot of young people that feel marginalized, and a desire to lash out against society.
I think this kid would have taken a shot at Biden as well, given half a chance.
The only thing notable about this is he was willing to take a crack at a fellow Republican, but that just means that a desire to go down in history was more important than political party to a mentally ill young man.
Mental illness needs to be addressed, for sure. Not sure how they will do it, but I see a lot of young people in the HS where I teach that have severe mental illness. Maybe we need more psychologists with the means to give the appropriate level of attention to these troubled people.
