They knew anywhere in they low 8:50s would easily qualify. This is as fast as she can run this distance, period.
So, Parker Valby, with 3 minutes of pacing, was absolutely all out and couldn't ever run any faster, you say, whereas Tuohy was pulled to an 8:35 with pros to chase the entire way. No, Valby too has multiple seconds to drop in both the 5000m and 3000m because she did not exactly have Monson to chase in her 8:42 and 14:56 races.
Valby lapped 27 runners if I counted correctly. Ridiculous how much extra distance she had to run to get around people and how much time she lost. Sub-8:40 was a certainty.
With the 5000m being held Friday night and the 3000m on Saturday night at NCAAs, I can definitely see her doing both. Barring something completely crazy, she will win the 5000m with a decent gap. I won't say she will certainly beat a fresh Markezich in the 3000m but she might. Even if she loses, she will certainly score more points for Florida than the DMR team will, since they are sitting at the #12 (and last) team to get in.
She is plenty fresh to race since she has only run a total of three races in the past 98 days - a 3000m, a 5000m, and a 1600m relay leg. Two races in two days will not hurt her at all.

Arkansas’s long sprinters were too deep to overcome, but will be balanced out by Texas (and others at Nattys), putting Florida in the mix for the Championship.

True but Arkansas W might get 35 points from their 400 m runners alone. I think they will be tough to beat

She also indicated she was racing/ training through this meet, so not at a full taper evidently.

Balderdash! Parker will likely run the 5k in two weeks, but I would like her to run the 3k and go after Tuohy’s record. I’m confident she would break it. She’s getting faster and her competitors are scared.
Expect Great Things!!!
Valby does not look tired after she runs, and didn't look tired running this 3k. Given that, I would say she could go quite a bit faster and probably break the 3k record in a fast race (or come very close).
The 5k is pretty much locked up for her at NCAAs, but it is possible Markezich could beat her in the 3k. especially if close at the end. Markezich has more speed and Valby will need to run away.

Markezich has 4:22/8:40/15:?
Valby 4:31/8:42/14:56
The way she stumbled after the 3000m race when her spikes caught the track maybe was indicative of a higher lactate level than a 5000m effort.

yeah hard to compare times of a conference championships where you have an open section of lapped runners to a top-notch invitational meet like Millrose-sure Valby was rabbited, but for relatively short distance; that Tennessee girl probably made her run another 1 second alone on that final straight!
In her post-race interview tonight, she said there were some issues on her mind (e.g., lost earbuds, no caffeine) that may have affected her DMR race.
Valby's interviews are always great. You forgot to mention the hair crisis. Her hair was a wreck 20 minutes before the DMR. Somebody jumped in to rescue the situation. I think it was Grace.
Valby called this a fun meet that also served as a workout. She said the two pacers were needed to slow her down because she has a tendency to be too rambunctious.
Great word. Definitely not a Tuohy word.
Valby was sad that she missed a cousin's wedding to run this weekend.

It just occurred to me she ran the last 10 laps of the 3000 at pretty much the same pace as her last 6 laps of the dmr. Not sure what that says.
After her 14:56 5000m at BU, I suggested she could likely break 8:35, and come close to running 8:30 in a 3000m with optimal pacing, after some weeks of prep work. I said at the time, based on her post-race celebration at BU and with a bit better pacing, she maybe had a 14:54 in her that night, and the Jack Daniels’ Calculator says that is equivalent to an 8:34.
8:30 is 34sec/lap. Tonight she was held back to 36.5sec/lap for the first five laps, then soloed the remaining 10 laps at 34.4sec/lap, while going around a lot of athletes in the process.
Therefore, with optimal pacing, I still don’t think an 8:30 3000m is unrealistic.

It was stated on the broadcast Coach Palmer said most of what running she does is quality, with the remainder cross-training. If he can lock Valby into 68sec 400’s, she can eventually run 14:10 in the 5000m.
