It can't be the shoes, American marathoners wear the same shoes but they keep sucking, bests times 3 and 4 and 5 minutes behind everyone else!
They'd be closer if they upped their mileage closer to Cam Levins/Kiptum/Japanese level. More training hours does matter as seen in every other endurance sport.

It's possible that new shoes are enabling cheats to really smacked it and do extra training and produce new levels of performance. New shoes help but they could be the enabler. The new generation of gullibles here on Let's Run who think that it is solely technology and not drugs are conveniently overlooking this
I wrote on a different thread few weeks to Berlin that Kiptum was in great shape having witnessed him doing some incredible track sessions at the Annex track in Eldoret. The guy was in top shape but he was very clever to divert attention from himself by playing it all down claiming not to have had an ideal preparation prior to Chicago as compared to London. I reckon there is more to come from him.
More to come from him in Paris, hopefully. Maybe Tokyo also.
