According to her wiki page she was a 4-time state nordic skiing champion in HS and went to U of Denver (top-3 program) on a XC skiing scholarship. So she already had a deep endurance base when she started running ultras. But that doesn't necessarily translate into speed on the track.
I follow skiing, and somehow didn't know that. Was curious how she did against skiers I know and found an old interview. This was 2002, when she was a HS junior:

At last seasons state meet, Hopkin's junior Courtney Dauwalter was in eighth place going into the freestyle race, nearly 30 seconds back of number one ranked and 2001 champion, Lindsay Williams of Hastings. Dauwalter cranked out the only sub 14 minute time in the freestyle race and overtook the leaders to win both the freestyle and pursuit titles. Later on that spring at Junior Nationals, Dauwalter teamed up with Williams and Lindsey Weier (2002 Olympian) to crush the women's J1 relay field, winning by over a minute.
Both Lindsay Williams and Lindsey Weier were Olympians in 2006, so she beat a future Olympic skier in skiing for that state title. (Williams was older than her, so not because of an age advantage.)
Her club team, White Noise Nordic listed her under a flyer for the club:
Courtney Dauwalter-Three-time USSA Junior Olympic National Champion, six-time USSA All-American,
four-time MN State Champion.
That J1 relay in the 2022 was one of the national championships. I wonder if she won any individual JN championships (probably). Old skiing results typically disappear from the internet, including NCAA skiing results.
Here's the article, including a skiing photo and her guess that she was training 15-25 hours a week that summer between HS junior and senior years:
