Tourist submarine taking people to the site of the Titanic wreck has gone missing

We are like the band on the Titanic that continued playing through the wet cold night to keep people’s spirits up.

Dark as it may be, you can’t deny there’s something funny about going to sight-see the most famous sinking ever only to join them in the big sink.

The question is , how do you keep contact with something 2.5 miles below sea level wirelessly? You can't use radio waves, because water is conductive, perhaps you can use low frequency radio waves in 10s of Hz range but then you need to have an antenna which is 23km (14miles) wide, which draws gigantic amounts of power with the bandwidth of few bits per minute. You can't use light or laser beam , because it will scatter and visibility is zero. So you can only use sound waves. But even that is tricky because pressure in ocean changes the deeper you go. Crazy thing is that we can communicate with space probe 23 bilion kilometers from earth and yet we cant communicate with submarine 2.5 miles under sea level

You just incessantly keep repeating “Can you hear me now?”.

Apparently the US has 'blocked' the UK from deploying their rescue equipment in favour of American stuff that doesn't go deep enough... get our priorities right eh.

That sub has gone down to the Titanic before and they were able to communicate with the ship. The only reason the sub can't communicate now is that something went wrong with the communication equipment on the sub. It's not the distance that's the problem.

One of the linked articles also quoted the last-minute-bailout passenger as saying it’s lost contact before too.

If they could fit a trans-Atlantic communications cable on a boat in the 1800s, surely they could fit a three mile long steel cable on a modern ship.

Nah, they were skilled individuals providing a valuable service. That’s not the case here in more ways than one.

Assuming the sub didn't implode, or wasn't hammered by a pod of killer whales, and the sub rose to the surface in an aborted dive, it would be painful if they were on the surface and couldn't open the bolted from outside hatch. They will waste a lot of air panicking trying to get out of what is essentially a thick-walled safe.

With all the poverty in Pakistan, this filthy rich Pakistani pays $500,000 for him and his son to go sightseeing to the Titanic. He risked his life for ego and bragging rights over the other billionaires.

Sad.

Hindsight is 20/20. You can’t honestly know you wouldn’t make similar choices if you were as wealthy.

Besides, it's literally a gravesite, not a tourist site, and needs to be treated as such.

The thing about a cable that long is it's pretty heavy. You'd need some powerful machinery to pull it across the ocean. It would probably break anyhow.

A sub cable would be more possible. Cables can pull drills up from miles under ground. The Soviets drilled the world's deepest ever hole, way deeper than the ocean.

There is no chance of "rescue" at that depth due to the oxygen time limit but "recovery" is certainly possible in the future. Look up Project Azorian. Fifty years ago, we had the technology to lift an entire Soviet submarine off the bottom of the ocean at a depth much greater than Titanic. If it wasn't for something breaking we would have brought it to the surface without the USSR's knowledge.

Yes, it’s very heavy but we had transatlantic cables before the civil war. Sure, they used to break back then but we’ve come a very long way since.

Obviously there are ships that can hold a very long cable. The problem is actually using that cable to connect to the top of the sub as it went down. It would be a problem, not only with ocean currents, but also possibly getting tangled on a part of the Titanic.

And using it as a rescue cable, well, how would that work? How are you going to get it down to the sub at 12,000 feet below sea level and connect it? You can't swim down that far, and there isn't a second rescue sub available.
