That's actually not a good recruiting class. Their top women's long distance runner was 10:50 for 3200 which is 362 in the nation. The top 1600m time is 5:03 which is 703rd in the nation.
It's a decent start, but realistically none will ever score individually on the track at ACCs.
Some of them might follow Heins to IU, especially the ones from Indiana.
7 of their 8 distance recruits can run a XC 5k in the 18's. Sure that's not super-elite 5k times, but Heins was trying to form a pack that he could train up.
Hopefully Joe sees value in the recruits like Heins did. Don't know what his vision is, as we haven't talked to him yet.

The harsh truth is the Joe is going to try to get back those women's scholarships ASAP. Many will lose their scholarships.
Why would he give a 5:00 runner a 50% scholarship when he can get an international athlete for 100% that will be an All-American her freshman year?
He can't afford to wait 4 years for that 5 minute runner to graduate to get her 50% scholarship back.
It's cruel but Joe is a proven winner and he'll do what it takes.
Exactly. Points are not scored and trophies are not handed out to the most improved. You have to be good enough to come in and contribute right away or the money can be better spent elsewhere, especially in the ACC. Respectfully this is a mid-major recruiting class.
Joe has never believed in cutting scholarships unless of course there is ineligibility or neglect of responsibilities (not coming to practice, skipping meets, etc). When he got to UNM he should have cut plenty of scholarships with kids that were left to him and were quite pathetic as athletes. But he didn't . He let them keep the scholarship. He recruited athletes at UNM that came from England and basically didn't want to run, just enjoy the sun. He didn't cut their scholarship. His philosophy on scholarships is that if a coach recruits that kid and the kid works hard but doesn't pan out it is the coaches fault. So unless the Louisville administration puts pressure on him to address scholarships then I don't believe he will cut them as he never has.
Bush finished 15th last year. I think its totally reasonable to say with a year more of training and experience she could be Top 10.
Not sure who NC State's #5 runner is but even if she got run over by a golf cart NC State will be tough to dethrone with those 4 running.
IF (Big if) all the CO runners are healthy Hertenstein and Cook were top 10 last year, Covert could easily be 10-15 and the other 2 were 25-30 so they could score in the 80s as a team.
NC St's 5th last year was 75th. 4 in top 10 might average 5 so that is 20. Hardly a slam dunk if you ask me, and I think Bush in top 10 is big ask as others like Plourde, McCabe, Jepkurui and probably more are better than last year
Sydney Seymour beat a healthy Covert at Nuttycombe before Covert got hurt, but one is considered top 15 potential (despite having finished 96th or worse in 2 of 3 XC nationals) and one isn't even mentioned in the post. head scratcher.

from what I can see Sydney has used her 4 seasons of XC eligibity in 18, 19, 21, 22. Covert has run 15:35 and 32:30 and 2 years ago was 31 in XC. 3rd last year in Pac 12 behind Hertenstein and Venters. Then her season and year went downhill.

you'll have to ask her, she posted on instagram a few weeks ago that she has a 6th year and is planning on using it.
Either way, 10-15 for Covert seems like a big stretch still for someone who has never shown to have that kind of consistency in the fall. Especially when Bush is a considered a stretch to be top 10 despite already being top 15 in her career.
Even if Seymour is wrong and can't run, Hartman should be better in XC than Rauber was last year. She ran with Quarzo and Rauber at Adidas XC unattached last year even before all her college improvement came, and then won the Joe Piane open race with a time that would have placed her ~top35 despite running from the slow race.

Seymour did not run indoor or outdoor track in 2019 so she should have 1 season left in both. But XC looks used up. I would guess Hartman maybe 55 in XC which if you add to top 4 scores would put the team right about where CO might be (IF their injuries are gone).

In saying CU was favorite on paper, I wasn't wavering in my pack fandom, just being impartial. 5-7 for state will be between Hartman, Rauber, Quarzo, Howlett, Loveys, Shultz and perhaps 1 of the 4 freshmen. It's certainly possible one of that group steps up to be a very good #5 and with all these bodies, they have nice depth at 6-7.
Seymour v Covert. A healthy Seymour has been wildly inconsistent, while a healthy Covert is relably good. I'd pick Covert.
UNM Currently could have the BEST team Returning. I think UNM is going for at least a solidly great coach, and if that happens, UNM might be the team to beat this year! Plus UNM's men's team is definitely looking much more loaded!!
UNM is a highly coveted coaching position now. Albuquerque has the altitude and the weather!! If the very intelligent AD at UNM picks the right person, New Mexico could stay on this great run!!

There are now 7 UNM girls in the portal, unless they hire someone very quickly UNM will be in rebuilding mode.
Additionally, as I said elsewhere, I think there is a better than 50% chance that the AD picks a coach who may be more track success oriented.
I think NCst will have Shaw again, right? She is racing all summer so no longer injured. Plus they will have Loveys, Rauber... but yeah CO is going to be formidable. Plus the altitude effect will make Cook and others even better
I think Shaw is done having run XC in 18, 19, 21, 22 (ran for NCSt in adidas XC challenge)
