Why was this thread deleted in the first place? It seems like a fair topic to discuss.

Now we have a whole thread mocking British culture and that’s allowed to stand. Why is that allowed?? I don’t understand these moderators.

This seems like too much extrapolation. I missed the thread entirely, so I don’t really know what else might have been on it. But I’m familiar with the word spear but not “spear thrower” as a term with derogatory connotations. In fact, a google search for “spear thrower” doesn’t bring up derogatory connotations unless you search explicitly for it as say “spear thrower slur”.

Spear throwing is how all early mankind hunted. We talk all the time about how humans are fantastic long distance running animals because that is how we evolved. We talk about how East Africans are so good maybe in part because their kids start running to school at an early age. It’s not that much of a stretch to ask why, when so many African tribes (unlike western societies) still hunt the old way including techniques like spear throwing, should they no produce some of the world’s best in the sport of spear throwing. Was this the thread’s point? If so, I don’t find it racist. It’s a frivolous topic for chatting about but not racist.

Of course, if the thread used other mocking language veiled in the form of a legitimate, even if frivolous, question like the above, or if the OP persisted with a term after being told it’s a slur, I can imagine it being racist, especially since it’s all too common here on LRC.

Not universal superiority. Someone claimed Europeans are genetically superior at throwing due to their size. I disagree with that statement, but I don’t see how it’s different than those who claim East Africans are superior at distance running. There was a whole book published on that latter theory (The Sports Gene) which was promoted on this site. Again, inconsistency.

And you sound like a jerk. That term is not common at all. From what I can gather it’s a term that was used by older generations. I bet hardly anyone under 30 knows it.

Do you not see the inconsistency? Is it not race baiting to claim that one race is genetically superior at distance running? That has been deemed ok on this site. Why? And why is baiting Americans ok? All I’m asking for is consistency and transparency of rules.

You didn’t object to it when I raised it as an issue. Silence is tacit approval. Just like others can ascribe intent and beliefs to the javelin thread posters without knowing for sure what they were thinking, the same can be done for you.

It’s not race baiting to look into possible genetic explanations of East Africans’ superiority in distance. In fact, among the bundle of possible reasons postulated, some like leg to body length ratio would seem to be inheritable traits.

It’s not offensive to ask why despite having all modern privileges, Americans are not good at distance or why white sprinters are disproportionately represented and look into possible genetic explanations. It is offensive to suggest that Africans are inherently genetically inferior at something because it is very difficult to disambiguate the effects of growing up in relative poverty compared to the western world as a possible explanation.

You said it wasn’t race baiting. It obviously was (and successful). My argument is not predicated on joining your discussion on inconsistencies, so not commenting on that is not approval, tacit or otherwise.

You only call them the thought police if they disagree with you.
