Interesting tidbit: Katie Schide hit the Les Chapieux aid station in 5:20 where Courtney's split there last year was 5:38. Courtney did have an amazingly strong second half last year but still.. Pretty excited to see how this shakes out.
I really think this type of extrapolation from a runner's early-race splits is impossible. I think we need to wait a bit because a strong first half can be doom. But still, gotta agree that this year's conditions look fast.
28 minutes ahead of last year splits, I think either of Killian or Jim will drop the race, wont be able to hold that pace...
Yeah this could really be an opportunity for a patient person in a chase pack. I wonder if Kilian's strategy, given his potential covid effects, is to push hard and see if he has what it takes. I sort of wonder if he's trying to run jim into the ground so he'll drop and he can relax a bit.
Kilian not climbing as good as Jim right now makes it interesting... Jim the Blue Collar runner vs. lactate testing White Collar science experiment Jornet!!
Definitely! He looked much better. That’s a hot pace and both were showing no signs of cracking yet.
Looks like Kilian is in control. He came to the aid station a little behind Jim and moved out in the moment Jim did.
The GPS tracker seems to indicate Kilian may have started a break up the steep climb out of Courmayer, but given the imperfection that may be an illusion. We'll know at the next aid.

They said on the livestream that the lactate testing is for a physiological study that someone is doing. Kilian is literally giving his blood for science lol

It's a better story than giving blood to coyotes for sure.

Sure, see you tomorrow. Typical the US pedal to the metal.
Man I love DBo and he does a fantastic job of commentating for these long events but I really wish he'd stop talking over the English translations of the conversations happening in Courmayeur. Getting an inside take from people who are there, runner's crews, etc is far more interesting than him reading out a racer's ultrasignup history...
Will the highly specific training pay off for Jim? Hope he can hold it together. A little surprised at the top 4 with pau and Xavier pretty much non factors, but exciting to see
