He doesn't have any of his own kids but it's safe to say for the rest of this weekend those four guys are his children!!!

Why are you all so quick to assume you know everything about his training and how to coach him? Clearly something was wrong, you don’t lose the ability sprint because you haven’t raced since running a freaking sub-3:51 mile at Pre. I mean he went backwards to some unsponsored runners, that’s just not what happens to a Healthy Hocker.

Just like with Brazier last year, a lot of drama and stupid speculation would be ended if the athlete was simply straight with people before or after the race. Saying you’ve been injured, missed training and were not as sharp as you’d have liked to be is NOT making up an excuse, it’s just telling the truth. All major sports put out injury reports before, during and after competitions. I know if Steph Curry is going to play and if not why not, or that he’s playing at less than 100%. Also, despite the paranoia, this does not give some big advantage to the competition. Pros just assume everybody is 100% who’s out there competing.
Probably not helped by lack of racing and too many time trials. Last year he was almost over raced but he knew how to win. Stop hiding in Oregon and get out there and race more against the best. Only significant race in the build up was Pre really. Hope he runs better in the 5k.
Yeah agree - I think they have some weird approaches to training/time trials/races etc. I mentioned it earlier but the NCAAs last year sums this up in a nutshell. He had the brilliant win in the 1500 with a world class performance and then they roll him out in the 5000m "for points" where he still runs well but I remember just thinking bigger picture what is the point of this. Like he's young and motivated - he isn't going to say no but the body doesn't work like this.
I think though now I would shut it down for the season - I really would and that means races and time trials. I would take the L for the season and put it behind me. Of course saying that is real easy because I don't compete anymore and most likely is Hocker wants to get out and prove himself big time in as many races as he can before the end of September. But this is where a coach needs to be a coach and say dude, you have a long career ahead of you but we made some mistakes we will live to fight another day. It's so hard to stay at the top in this sport and the level is so good in the US right now if you aren't careful you can be here and gone in a sweet minute and there is plenty of examples to back that up.

okay great - and what is the primary reason distance runners get injured? In 99% of cases it's cumulative fatigue/wear on the body and not enough recovery. So if he is injured it doesn't change the narrative that the kid might be simple running on fumes at the moment because of the huge workload he's had in the last 18 months.

Not sure I totally agree on that. NBA players are obligated to talk to the media because it's tied in with their CBA, the same CBA which drives salary etc - of which the average NBA salary is around 8 million dollars. So it's written into the terms of their employment and they sign a contract to do so. Do you really think if this wasn't part of their contracts players would bother talking to the media as much as they (have to) do?
Nike employs Hocker - I don't know the details of the contract with respect to talking to media. But if it not stated in his contract he has zero obligation and it's his constitutional right to make the decision if he talks or not. You can have an opinion about Hocker talking to media when it goes well and not when it doesn't - it doesn't mean you are right. Sorry.
