Florida rejects 41% of new math textbooks citing Critical Race Theory

Desantis et. al. rejected these books, allegedly because they contained CRT.

When pressed to give an example of CRT from any of these books, Desantis' press secretary cited a worksheet that:

1) was not from a textbook;

2) was not from Florida;

3) was not clearly from a math class;

4) was not CRT; and

4) appears to have been falsified.

When you can't back up your claims with anything other than a falsified document that would be irrelevant in any case, your claims are false and you are lying.

He amuses us. A gift that keeps on giving.

And he is still the leader of the GOP and has annointed himself to be so into the future. And lawmakers feebly continue to allow him to do so. So he is always relevant to any discussion of Republican viewpoints. As far as this discussion, DeSantis is like mini-trump. He is like Trump 2.0.

Yet it is the Democrat Party that insists that Bruce Jenner is a woman, that direct abortion is "safe," and that math is racist.

There are many trends that, I think, will cause people to look less admiringly upon public school education. The Democrats are leading the devaluation of public school education by quashing parental influence, allowing boys in bathrooms, locker rooms and sports for girls, and adding frictions along the fault lines of race, sex, and ethnicity.

A member of my immediate family is a high school Math teacher (AP stats, AP Calc AB/BC; and beyond for select students) at a school in the Northeast. This individual has told me about the rather sudden encroachment of social and racial issues into his/her teaching against his/her will - edicts from non-math-educated school administration (he/she has a PhD in mathematics). He/she has become extremely concerned that the all-but-forced teaching of a particular viewpoint on the social issues in question has diminished the quality of math education.

This seems to be how it is worked into math. Examples are from Toronto, but states like Oregon and California, certainly, are on board.

practical scenarios: “Even holding up a one-litre bottle of water and
estimating how many of these would it take to fill a bathtub — students
begin learning about volume capacity averages … and then have them think
about how much water their household consumes in a week.”"

Seems promising. You can even branch out into whether, say, a cylindrical water heater of x dimensions has sufficient volume to make a warm bath in that tub and so on.

But:

"She follows up by talking with students about how many First Nations
communities have boil-water advisories and encourages them to discuss
why. Ultimately, if we want children to see math as a “tool to help us
understand the world,” says Caswell, “[teaching] could do that by using
math to understand issues of power and privilege.”"

Just how I remember math class being. Our discussion on how oppressed folks are on the reservations sharpened my algebra.

Here's another example from the article:

"In To’s class, for example, students examine the issue of police carding
through proportional reasoning: students do a probability experiment
where coloured blocks — representing the proportion of white, Black,
brown, and “other” in the Toronto population 2011 — are placed in a bag.
They then pick random blocks from the bag and note the colour. When the
class aggregates the data, they review how to convert fractions to
decimals and percentages. They then discuss disproportionality by
comparing the probability experiment with the actual data showing that
Toronto police carded Black Torontonians at three times the expected
rate."

Prime directive of CRT: difference ==> racism.

Are you seriously trying to argue that this tweet, from Desantis' press secretary, is unrelated to the decision to reject 41% of new math textbooks because of CRT?

The burden of proof clearly lies with those who say something exists, NOT on those doubting it. If there is CRT in those books, show it. Provide the example(s).

The only way to show that there is NO CRT in these books is to show each and every page of the book (clearly absurd) and even then, the question posed would remain the same - show us the CRT in these books.

Well, when you manufacture a problem, then "solve" the problem you appear to be doing something. Don't get me wrong, Dems are equal in this department. Politicians in general are self-serving and do very little problem solving. So, I'm not accusing republicans of manufacturing issues that require solving.

But, in this particular case, CRT is a virtual non-issue in the way math is taught and requires zero attention. No problem, no problem to solve. But, DeSantis has solved the problem? People who voted Trump will be too ignorant to understand this. Just like there was no wide spread or coordinated voter fraud.

I didn't say it was unrelated. Yet another lie and strawman. I said she didn't post that tweet (which was really a repost of someone else's tweet) as proof of CRT in the textbooks that were rejected. She never said it was an example of anything from a textbook that was rejected, yet the person I quoted and others here are claiming she did. Just pointing out the ridiculous lies before more people run with them.
