Thank you. Great thread. I read the book about John and your program. Amazing program. Fellow Canadian here. -25 tonight where I am. Running was always a challenge in the winter here. I know you can relate. I was a couple of years younger than Lobsinger, Earl, Peckham, Hatherly,, Goodenough. A few years older than Clark, and Stark. Happy birthday again. All the best.
You name such complete Canadian legends! After 29 years in the US I moved back to Canada 5 years ago. I actually live right near Peckham and his kid is the same age as my youngest. Tough to run in the cold. I actually only looked at schools in warmer areas. Canada is a good place to bring up a family though! I actually talk to Clark a bit and saw Dennis Stark a few years ago at OFSAA

As a side note, after this race Graeme Fell’s wife came up to me mad as can be saying that I “ stole “ their families prize money since she thought he would win. Kinda surreal. But I kept every penny!!
I remember beating Doug only once--when he was, like, 13 and not yet over 100 pounds. All claims to the contrary are false modesty on his part.

Continue to love this thread - Thank You!! This is what the Letsrun forum should be all about.
I know we're not to take anything too seriously, but your training tip above was a great one... So a slightly more serious question for you: Since you were involved in one of (if not the) greatest running programs of all time, if you had to give % allocations to aspects that contributed to the program's success, how would you allocate the following...
- Coach McDonnell's ability to coach and motivate
- The convergence of great running talent (that you all brought there)
- The competitive, yet fun dynamic of the Razorback team
- The running environment of Arkansas Ozarks
- The "special sauce" workouts that everyone else wanted to copy
Great, great question. Just outstanding! Like Wottle wining the 800m great. I have to think about this one.
55% Johny Mac’s mostly ability to motivate and coach.
20% the great runners.
20% team dynamics
3% running environment
2% workouts.
Thing is you could put us with Johny Mac pretty much anywhere and he would have a successful team. How good was Arkansas track before he got there?
He was the main reason for our success. No doubt about it.
Thank you! May all of us who coach strive to emulate the incomparable Johnny Mac.
It was telling after his passing to see SO MANY Hogs remember him fondly and very respectfully. It was clear that he had to have been a superlative coach / person, and his impact in running and in life will extend for quite some time.
I remember your Smokin Joe thread on here many years ago. Anyway, happy millionth birthday! Do you ever run into our hear from Bomba anymore?
Also, what's the prevailing opinion of Teddy Mitchell among Hog alumni?

All other claims to the contrary wound make Doug an Outliar. But I do not want to put Malcolm in the middle of this.

Sex before or after the pre mile?
Great thread.
Do you have any tips for the youngsters about how to fly for free on Southwest?
And sadly the Nut House needs a new investor: perhaps a good place to park the riches from your running career?

You only remember beating me once because the other 10 times I was so far behind you, you forgot That I was in the race. PS you overstride when you run slow. Work on that :)
And PSS Reid is secretly training me to beat you as soon as you turn 60!
Thank you! May all of us who coach strive to emulate the incomparable Johnny Mac.

Johny Mac was the man!! I was probably the 5th best recruit out of Ontario in 1983 so why was I the one setting Canadian/ NCAA records 3 years later? John McDonnell is the answer. It is great that so many coaches strive to be like him.

Hmmm. How about this story ..
So after I won the pre mile ( and Joe Falcon won the much more competitive two mile), we were all eating diner in Al Sal’s restaurant.
I was at a table with about 8 Canadian guy runners. We were always hard on each other ( Hoogewerf, Williams, Boileau, Fell, Klassen, Clement, McCloy etc).
Sure enough two very cute girls walk up to our table and come next to me.
They then ask if I won the mile.
I reply, “ you know, I actually did win the mile today”.
The other 7 guys are all dripping with jealousy and my mind turns to math equations involving the number 3.
Then they ask if I went to Arkansas.
Impressed with their obvious fascination with me I reply that I did in fact go to Arkansas.
Then they ask if I know Joe Falcon.
With my dreams of victory starting to fade I say, “ yes,…….. in fact I used to room with him”.
Then they asked me if I could introduce them so they could get his autograph.
Now, All 7 Canadian men now had devilish grins on their faces as I sheepishly obeyed their request and took them over to Smoking Joe’s table. The I had to shamelessly come back to our table after getting the “ assist”.
Let’s just say those 7 guys had endless fun for months asking me repeatedly to go get Joe’s autograph for them. They thought it was hilarious.
Hopefully that answers your question.
I have a question:
How do you puny, emaciated distance fellas get any ladies?
Thanks.

Flying on Southwest for free takes a level of skill rarely seen by 8/15 guys. Only Jamey Harris or maybe Atkinson on a good day could match such aggressive prowess with flight attendants. A modern day Engels has the skills too is my guess. But not many others. Certainly no 5k / 10k guys. Please don’t mention a marathoner.
I could not think of a more worthwhile investment than throwing every single penny I have at the Nut house.
Unfortunately my wife makes most of the money these days and she may frown on us owning a business that has a stuffed gorilla as it’s center piece. Obviously her practicality is ill placed, so I will immediately start a hunger strike until she releases our millions to save this iconic establishment! Wish me luck.

Oh, you obviously have spent little time with Walker, Coughlan, Flynn, Scott et all on the circuit.
Women typically fall in love with their ears not their eyes. Gift of the gab trumps all.

Interesting. I will take this under advisement. I mean, not that I have any difficulties in this area.
Thank you.
Are you suggesting that NZL and the Irish are cunning linguists?
First and only time I saw you run in person was in 88' when you and Marc Olsen put on a 1500m clinic for us star deprived Manitoban's. You still have the Manitoba indoor open record at 3:41.87. Inspired me to run track and I went on to have a very mediocre but fulfilling track career.
You should take up XC skiing in your old age. Best thing for the body.
take care
This thread is AWESOME, eh?
Many thanks for doing this!!!
Was there a particular runner you idolized or were especially inspired by as a kid?
Also, what colleges were you most interested in attending and how did Arkansas end up winning you over?
Finally, there have been some great Canadian comedians in our lifetimes (your sense of humor is no joke) but who is your all-time favorite comedian?
Keep on keeping on!

I do talk to Bomba. He lives not to far from me. Great move by Queens to hire him. Smoking Joe was the man.
