As previously stated, I'm from Mass, and have never heard of Mac Allen or Bill Hart. Also, Mike Payson and Joan Samuelson are from Maine (ME).

In South Carolina it has to be the sexy Janice Addison.

Hey now, wait a minute... While yes, there are a number of Excelsior runners on my previous list, I put them there because they're dang good.
Tim O'Rourke (American Age Group Recordholder 50K and dang, he just ran a 1:48:57 30K at 47 for 7th overall)
Jim Gorman (2003-2004, 55-59) and Don Paul (2000, 2002, 2003) have both been multiple year honorable mentions in Running Times Masters of the Year. (Compaq 10K -- Don Paul, 50, San Francisco, CA 34:21 (he also holds an unvalidated 50K road record from 1982 - 2:50:55)
Lloyd Stephenson was USATF's 2002 Age Group Master of the Year and ranked #1 45-49 in Running Times 2000 and 2002
Shirley Matson (not Excelsior) holds pretty much every American age group record.
I'm shocked and outraged that you don't believe me!
THE best would indicate ONE person. Not as many as you feel like. Pick one.
From California:
All ages - Nolan Shaheed ... there's no contest
Top Performer - Danny Martinez (14:13 5,000 as master, 2005 Masters USA X-Country Champion)

Walschlager is probably the best master at the marathon in SD, but Brian Clark probably would win everything shorter than 15K.
Steve Spence... I watched that guy run 23:44ish and later quote that he hadent actually done a workout 3 months prior. Crazy guy!

Was her last name formerly Helvestine?
Oregon:
Men:

45-49 Cheryl Tronson
True. I forgot about Clark.
Humbled,
Do you know where Laurie Decker has been? She had a prolific racing schedule the past two years, but I don't recall seeing her name much, if at all, in 2005. She is on the west side, so it is very possible I've been paying attention to the wrong races.
"(Hey, what is it with all the "Laur**" names???)"
I think the Laur** names were very popular in the 1960's. There were 4 Laur**'s on my college cross country team my freshman year.
Vermont: Eric Morse
Colorado: Matt Carpenter
Is masters running update?
Yes. What was the question again?
Rhode Island checking in! Will add a couple of honorable mentions:
F:
Claire Gadrow (ultras)
Lisbeth Kenyon (triathlon primarily)
Diane Senecal
M:
Marty Tighe
Dave Principe
Bob Jackman
Norm Bouthillier
Bob Lamothe (triathlon primarily)

He's won like 1000 races...gotta be good, right?
Still alive and kicking, albeit much slower.
Just read through the whole thread. So interesting. And though I knew/know some of these guys & gals, many of the names were not familiar. Curious as to how many of them are still at it? Of course we know such luminaries such as Ed Whitlock have passed away but most of the runners named were in their 40s & 50s so would 'only' be mid 50s to late 60s by now.
Doug Bell is still at it in CO, though doesn't seem to be setting records anymore.
