What a fantastic race! Chris Thompson an inspiration to all of us! 2:10! What a time! What an achievement!
Great to hear from Chris in the interview at the end.
Said he had the course figured out at 30 minutes, knew "these guys have to be in great shape to keep this up" and paced for the overall time, taking into account the sharp turns on the lap and the effect on time/legs.
Knew at 2 laps to go that he had it.
Experience.

Think he more crocs. Much more interesting conversation than making the Olympics at his age after a long career of ups & downs.

Was he wearing On shoes or were they Nike's painted black like Marty Hehir at the US Trials.
From the Instagram photos I saw this morning he is wearing the Next %'s painted black.
Brief BBC report
Great example of running your own race today. Connor and Aadan went with an early 2:09 pace that neither knew they had in the bank, as did Griffiths who hasn't been near that in four years. As you can see in the splits, Thompson didn't push himself back in the race, the race came back to him. It's a great story to see a jobbing pro get one last shot at the big show. If you can find his post-race interview then give it a watch, it's emotional

I'm pretty sure he was wearing painted Vaporflys. But, hat tip to Wejo here: who cares? He won the race and what do you see all over the post-race interviews? A guy plastered on On Runnin apparel. The cameras aren't on his feet, it's on his face. Now On have another Olympian putting their brand on TV and on the media. His story will come up repeatedly as Tokyo draws near. So yeah, as Wejo says all the time, if a brand can't make a good enough shoe (*cough* Hoka *cough*), let your athletes run in whatever they like. Better to have a winner covered in your apparel and promoting you than all your athletes sitting at home
Absolutely - great interview. Should be available on British Athletics YouTube at the end of uploaded stream ...
And although it isn't rocket-fast, a 2:10:50 on a course with a few tight corners is very respectable. Hard to know what conditions will be at Tokyo - probably not quite as difficult as Rio, where gold was 2:08:44, but even so in a Championship race Chris (and Callum & Ben) can do themselves proud.
I expect Callum especially to do pretty good.

Was Hehir running in Adidas at the Marathon Project?
The winner today, Thompson, appeared to be running in a pair of AlphaFly's that were painted black.
AlphaFly's...the ones with the air-pods. The paint didn't stick to the air-pods too well, which was the giveaway. So what is his story? Does he not have a shoe sponsor?

What are you talking about?!? The shoes are a HUGE story, and it kudos if it starts being a bigger STORY if that's what it takes for competitors to step up with a viable product.
[quote]runderun wrote:The cameras aren't on his feet...
Well maybe we NEED more cameras on the shoes, because like or not, they ARE an important part of the sport, more so than any time in its history. It is journalistic negligence, ignorance, or idiocy to try and deflect away from the shoes.

Sure, as long as that is clearly conveyed, because the shoes ARE that important.

Nope, they were Alphafly's, probably a bit more of a stability challenge on that course versus the VaporFly's.
Agree with this which is why I said what I said. Blacked out Nike's but does that matter? No. On gets to promote him & he has an amazing story. The people focusing on footwear are the people who want to focus on footwear.

Yes, this is true. He was wearing crocs literide (TM) disguised as Nike Next% painted black to disguise the fact they weren't ON running shoes. Alan Storey has a big thing about runners doing their speedwork around Hyde Park in crocs but they don't like to publicise this for obvious reasons. They put it on the BBC website then took it down due to a conflict in sponsorship interests.
