Funny this came up, because I was talking with my wife about this last night. It was clear throughout the speech that most people being called out had to stop themselves from that kind of saluting. Instead, they were doing the military salute, or a close wave. The more I thought about it, the long salute is kind of the natural thing your arm does when you're gesturing to someone far away. Right now, think about if you were to acknowledge someone across a football field. Do it right now and ask yourself what that looks like.
