Atlantic Region XC 2008

From the NYU website:

NYU’s bid to successfully defend its championship ended almost before it began, as three Violet runners (senior Mark Hess, junior Calvin Lee, sophomore Matt Turlip), were all involved in a multi-runner spill soon after the race had begun.

“It was a very tight first turn and a lot of runners wound up pushing into each other and falling,” Schneider [who lost a shoe at ~2000m] revealed. “Someone right next to me fell, and I was fortunate to escape that jam.”

Violets’ junior Zach Maher, who managed to avoid the pile-up and keep both shoes on, took All-America honors with a 34th-place finish (24:59.55).

Hess wound up in 144th place (25:51.23), sophomore Sebastian Schwelm took 156th (25:55.26), Turlip was 204th (26:13.86), and freshman Jack Fitzhenry was 261st (26:45.81).

[Lee,] who injured his left heel in the fall, did not finish the race.

Plattsburghs girl top finisher for atlantic region,way to peak.....

So this course must have been crazy fast from looking at the times. I am amazed how many guy are under 25 and how many girls are under 21:30. This course has to be downhill or fast and flat as a pancake.

the course was frozen solid. I would be surprised if it was about 25f during the race. It was just plain cold.

where was Brett Dolan for them at the race? Wasn't he All-Region?

props to cortland on some PIMP outfits at the awards ceremony.

supposedly he was very ill thursday. looking at the results they might have been able to move up 1 spot in the team score with him

You don't know what you're talking about. Geneseo attended the National awards ceremony in shirts and ties and then congratulated the Cortland guys afterwards. They were class all the way - at least from what I saw.

The biggest obstacle Peter had to deal with was the despicable behavior of the Cortland's men's team, a former Division I program. They knew they couldn't beat Kosgei so they relied on an unsportsmanlike strategy of running very close to Peter, while shoving and sometimes even clipping the back of his spikes. In a sport known for its strong community of runners no matter the team, this act ranks among the lowest of the low. Fortunately, Kosgei possessed the strength to withstand the conduct of the Cortland runners to win the race in a classy manner.
