This story coming out in that environment could have easily caused a few percent of independents and normal Republicans to switch votes or sit the election out. If that had happened, Clinton would have been elected.

If the "grab em by the p*ssy" remark didn't sink him, I don't think the information of him (an ultra-wealthy celebrity) banging a c-level pornstar was going to shift opinions at that point. Paying her off was a much worse look because it made it seem like there was something more serious to hide. Of course the media outlets took their liberty, I remember at the time journalists were claiming that he was paying her to keep quiet about his "super serious Russian collusion conspiracies."
