Hardest geezer no olonger going for 2:30 a few weeks after calling out 'haters' for trying to explain to him that he is not fit enough to run sub 2:30
He has only adjusted the target to a 2:35 though which is entirely based of a dodgy v02 max test (similar to the one Goddard got me thinks). Looking forward to both of them attempting to run the pace that a random guy with a treadmill has told them they can run only to blow up spectacularly and make 20 posts about respecting the marathon.
Absolutely cannot stand Russ. He's everything I hate about the influencer-isation of running wrapped up into one scruffy ginger clown. Proper grifter.
Strava is bad enough for adverts without people posting cack like that too.
Your semi-regular reminder to hit the 'quote post' button if you're going to directly reply to someone and not actually name who you are talking about. This means other users don't have to trawl through previous pages to understand who your post refers to (in this case it was Welsh Runner).
Noted cheers! And yes, it was about Matt - one of the first YouTube runners I noticed that used to really get on my tits, long before the explosion of runfluencers over the last couple years.
He sold Trackstaa as well last year, not sure how much he would've got for that but probs a decent amount.
Also I'm pretty sure he's fairly close with the Represent guys, so probably is bringing in a decent chunk from them.
10k or so I heard, I think it was a bit of a sinking ship once the other people they had involved sold up.
Weird page now, just steal everyone’s photos with terrible quality screenshots 😂
Manthorpe struggled to monetize the page, so cashed in - what made the page 'work' was their ability to get new stories, records and race headlines etc on the app very quickly. Although lots of content re-use and stealing photos, I imagine it took a fair bit of effort to stay on top of everything.
Ben Green of RunThrough invested in the page, obviously saw the opportunity to use as a marketing platform for RunThrough & TopFlight events, but now the page is even weirder - a strange amalgamation of global headlines, scandals and then the next post is a live stream of the u13 Boys 800m heats for Northern Athletics...
I know someone with no youtube channel and a modest IG following, who gets trips to all the marathon majors in return for doing a bit of advertising for one shoe brand on their posts.
I think some of it is just down to your rapport with the brand managers, if you're easy to get along with and happy to jump in the trips they organise then you're going to keep getting invited. Aubrey brings good vibes, and has a solid social media following, that's all you need in this game really.
[By the way I find his content a bit cringe, but I'm putting myself in the shoes of a social media brand manager trying to pick accounts that get attention from a wide section of the running community - my taste will be totally different from the masses, but what's to my taste is irrelevant]
Similar story - know a very good sub elite athlete with absolutely 0 social media, not even strava. Was invited to an athlete development day thing with one of the major shoe brands - and are now supported by them with shoes, kit for racing/training, and a stiped for race entry and travel.
Asked them how they did it and apparently the marketing manager told them that they were the only person who emailed ahead to introduce themselves and thank the brand, followed up by a post event thank you/debrief on the event. Just being nice goes a long way in building relationships when you just need to convince one or two people that you're worth throwing a relatively small amount of annual budget at.
Like with Aubrey he doesn't seem like he'd be particularly good value for money vs lots of others - he's not reaching anyone new particularly, lags behind on content (although he does seem to spend that time producing some fairly well made videos so...) but he does seem like he'd be a very good networker and you can sell his content/concepts quite easily I think
I’m interested, what kind of times are we talking here?
Manthorpe certainly hawks himself out to enough interviews on Z list podcasts thinking hes some big boss
As much as his content is dire, hes in a different league to most the team Makou runners and surely warrants having a sponsor? He lives in Manchester which is a poor, cheap area to live in but the only way hes surviving is off mummy & daddy or some inheritance funds dropping in. Does he have a proper job at all?
If he were on Team Makou, and allowed to keep training as he is, im sure he would be the top dog in the group. Although having to be coached by Hobdell and wear Hokas, he would be lucky to break 28mins again. Is New Balance Manchester still operating? You would think he would be an ideal candidate to get them up and running again as theyve died a death
He’s actually good on shoe reviews as he’s not tied to a contract and doesn’t seem to kiss up to brands like he’s desperate to get one. Seeing people who used to be authentic tell you rubbish shoes are good is a bit of an eye roll.
Apparently you haven’t noticed that he’s been on multiple Diadora trips to Italy, and he has claimed that the Diadora Gara Carbon is the best super shoe. Don’t try to argue that he’s neutral in his shoe reviews!
It's clearly not possible to be both a full time youtuber and a full time elite athlete. You have to pick your lane.
All the top marathoners aren't responsible for scripting/filming/editing their own content. Think Yee, Sesemann, Young, Mantz.
Those elites that are doing their own content - Butchart, Manthorpe - the content is nowhere near the level of RTJ. You could argue that its due to lack of skill but i'd argue they don't have the time when your focus is running as fast as you possibly can.
RTJ is a YT'er first, runner second. Doesn't matter what he says. That's why he'll never reach his full potential IMO. If he was a runner first, his content wouldn't be half as good as it is.
Baloney. Plenty of Olympic marathon runners with full time jobs. Runners of past eras would laugh at the thought of doing your miles then sitting on your backside all day waiting for the next run.
There are so many hours in a day , use them wisely and you'll fit what you need to.
From a glance at his threads, he's been crying about pros showing up to their local 5k and stomping everyone. He also doesn't like it when they get all of these extra perks even though he gladly accepted so much free stuff from marathon majors including free bibs as an influencer.

Interested to know if he's got 2:29:59 as his target via runna and he's hitting their targets. And what settings you put in to get Runna to get it to recommend a 50k weighted run as a workout for the marathon...
Another case of runna athlete fails to hit goals. Although this was probably the most clear, no way was he doing 2:30 off the back of his last one; nobody with any sense thought he was doing that.
Top grifting was having huel label out during his vo2 max test, honestly gotta respect that game.
Kofluzi threw in the towel on running it looks like. I wonder what happened.
A lot of "influencer" used and will use running as a stepping stone to get traction, yes it is an amazing sport and everyone wants to show their gains, but not everyone will have enough discipline to go through all the ups and downs and keep a solid consistency, along with everything else in life.
Not sure how long kofuzi has been running for, probably many years and is ok to take a break I guess, but the reality is that a lot of well known influencer you see today won't be able to sustain this for long term, some of them started running mainly to bring content, I wonder how many would stick around with no social media..

Many of the YouTubers have mentioned in videos that they don't necessarily like running but they like getting faster. Cole, Fenton, Philly and Flopberg to name a few.
Where will they be when the PBs dry up? I can't imagine Fenton "doing a John Broom" and enjoying battling for masters titles and looking at his age grading.
These people don't like running. They like what running brings them. Some sort of minor celebrity and success. Where they go when the floodlights fade who knows?
Dentalathlete getting rightfully rinsed in his comments saying he got an MRI, has a stressy brewing up nicely but isn't going to change a thing.
If we ever need more confirmation that the bloke is an utter cretin. I'm amazed that he manages to keep his job holding the suction tube and handing brushes to the dentist.

All you've got to do is view the Scott Beattie Team Makou you tube video to see how dull it is to be a full time athlete. Get a part time job to take your mind off it seems the way to go.

Philly not liking running and doing it since childhood is some sticking power. I don’t know why you wouldn’t look for a sport you like an decade ago. Put 10 hours a week into any of them you’d be semi decent and happier.

I can see why cyclists or triathletes need to be full time but with running a 200k week is <14 hours at top level. Could do part time with that even allowing for recovery /sleep needs if you wanted something else to structure your day ( and maybe some extra security).

I also don't get the impression she massively likes it. I'm sure she likes improving and getting PBs; however, I don't see her getting much joy from the process.
