I am more apt to accept someone's pride at being an American when they actually CHOSE to come here and become a citizen. Even then, I think it's an odd thing to be proud of...mostly unearned success. It is infinitely more odd to be proud to be an American if you were just fortunate to be born here. I submit I love the United States as much as any person living here. Despite its flaws, I DO think it's the best country in the world (though Trump did his very best to try to f*ck that up, and he would have if given another 4 years).
So, for me, I would not say I am proud to be an American, but I am not ashamed either. I am grateful to be an American.
