I mean trumpism decimated farmers but didn't cost trump any support at all. I mean they were hammered over the last 4 years. They didn't care. All they cared about was pushing back against big city folk. And race, of course.

This is correct, but a little expansion on this: "Average" here means median; and "earned more" refers to household income.

You left out one of the biggest fears they have. The fear of being "invaded" by non-white immigrants. They couldn't care less whether immigrants are legal or not. The only thing they care is whether they are from "countries like Norway."

This is a rather non-trivial distinction. Single people are more likely to vote D and married people are more likely to vote R. Rs are also more likely to live in multi-generational households.

And here is my take on the "economy" issue. It's not that there is a big difference in household or personal income. Ds are more likely to be in growing industries and growing regions. Rs are more likely to be in declining or stagnating industries and declining or stagnating region. So even if their income levels are similar, their prospects for the future are very different. Ds are likely to believe things are better than a few generations ago, and will be better a few generations into future. Rs are likely to believe things used to be better, and are likely to get worse unless they stop what they believe to be backsliding. (Hence "I want my country back" and "American carnage.")

A big irony is that those declining/stagnating regions are less penetrated by recent immigrants. So their fear of their state turning into another California is unfounded. A bigger irony is accepting more immigrants might be one of the options left for them to revitalize their declining communities. I don't know how many people here have read this National Geographic article, but it's worth reading if you want to understand "Trump country."

I have three concerns:

(1) Trumps incompetence and willful incompetence to let this country fall apart on so many critical levels, covid, national security and economic. He wants Biden and subsequently the country to fail.

(2) Encouraging uprisings from cult members that may include some police, elected officials and even some military individuals.

(3) Even more dangerous than overt uprisings which can be put out easily, seething hatred from militias who will sporadically and secretly strike out at different targets (which may include Biden & Harris).

Trump has millions in his cult who sincerely believe the democrats had a coup and overthrew our government. I agree with Agip, you dismiss this threat as nothing.

Yes, we could be guaranteed that there will be zero violence from Trump supporters, and the state of America is still so depressing. 47% who wanted, or were OK with, 4 more years of him. JUST UN-BELIEVABLE.

I do agree that hating the other side makes more sense for his support than economic vulnerability. If one is being rational. Which seems dumb, on my part. As was mentioned, farmers in the last 4 years, and more broadly, any Trump supporter who's lived through a few cycles of 8-year R and D presidencies. Did they REALLY notice a big difference in their fortunes? No, I don't think so.

It's just so profoundly disappointing that SO, SO many Americans can countenance that man because they've convinced themselves of a boogy man on the other side. And I say this as a middle-aged conservative who's spent his whole adult life being pretty annoyed with the non-boogy man folks on the left.

According to the article, it's all about race - a society-wide reaction to the sense that "white culture" is being overwhelmed by "brown culture"; that whites are losing their own nation.

not a lot of examples of multi-cultural nations surviving the changeover from one ethnic group to another.

america might do better because there is less of a national 'blood and soil' myth. There is no ethnic 'american.'

But trumpists will try to create that kind of myth and that will damage the country massively. But racial resentment is their meal ticket so they will do it.

also in america's favor is the federal system. You can still go to a hyper-white place and live among your kind if you wish. That won't change for a long long time.

Don't make the mistake of thinking an aesthetic/movement of this grandeur is motivated by a single cause. Racial tension is only a single facet of several changes happening in America.

Racial changes (actually diversity overall not just race or ethnic) is just an aspect of the rise of "Trumpism" and it is probably more of a symptom than a strict cause.

I think there is a strong foundation of wanting life to be the way it once was for some is driving a good part of the movement. Just that sense alone can drive economic, ethnicity, sexual choice, future standing, etc all of which seem to be present in those who are true Trumpers. I also think that too many are identified as Trumpers and are not quite as large as what is considered his base.
