Ran my first marathon this weekend using the sirpoc build. Some context, I was a middle distance runner in college (151 800m) but now in my mid 30s. Been training pretty regularly the last 3-4 years but always derailed by hamstring issues 2-3 times a year. Recent PB before using NSM:
800: 2:00 (2022) :: mile 4:28 (2024) :: 5k 15:30 (2023) :: 10k: 33:20 (2023)
Summer and fall of 2025 I missed a lot of training time and started from very poor fitness in early October. By December I was into the full swing of vanilla NSM schedule, and bought a HR monitor mostly for monitoring my easy runs. Ran a 5k in early January, 16:34 which was my worst time on this course ever, but wasn't too concerned based on what I'd read here. Flash forward to mid February I ran my first half in 1:12:15, granted a fast point-to-point course (-150ft net elevation) but I was very pleased given my historic weaker performances in longer events.
Then switched to a NSM special marathon block for a hilly marathon course (+1000 feet gain in first 9 miles, net -200 ft for the full thing). I would do some of my 5x3mi sessions on a rolling hills course, but otherwise no modifications. Ran 2:39 which slightly exceeded my goal of 2:40, the winner ran 2:37 and is a 69:30 half marathoner. Definitely excited with my progress so far, since January I strung together 60 and 70 mile weeks for 11 consecutive which is way more consistent than I've ever been.
Planning on doing some shorter stuff (including at least one mile) this summer before another half and 10k in the fall. For the first time in 10+ years I am confident I can stay healthy, and I think I can knockoff my 10K PR for sure and probably the 5k as well. The method works!
