Maybe it is just show-boating, posturing, and showing support for what they deem to be the future of their party in Donald Trump.

It's all to create as convincing a narrative as they can - that the whole election was widely disputed (and all us Republicans and their states) knew it, and now in 2022 and in 2024, it's time to take back what was wrongfully stolen from us. If that is the goal, then creating a unified front now is in their best long term interest. Even if it is a completely fabricated narrative based on nothing more than wishful thinking.

Again, trying to explain what would otherwise seem to make little if any sense.

The Republican Senators nixed repealing Section 30, not renaming some bases and moving funds around to pay for the wall. Meanwhile, they're cool with Trump trying to destroy democracy.

The DNA will prove no such thing. It's a stain on her dress and it's not semen. There are also some other people's DNA in the sample.

A match would only prove that he lied when he said he never met her. I hate Trump, but no POTUS should respond to a request from someone's personal attorney.

Well, she says he assaulted her. He denies it (said "she's not my type") and says he never met her. If his DNA is on her dress, most people will believe her and not him, meaning most people will conclude that he assaulted her, and that conclusion will be based on the DNA match. So, yes, the DNA will either prove of disprove the assault. It's not direct Clinton-level proof, but in this case it might as well be.

Now, if Trump had said that he knew her and may have put his arm around her but he never assaulted her, you'd have a better argument. Because then, there'd be another explanation for how his DNA got on her dress (apparently it's on the sleeve). But given the position he's taken, it's become an all or nothing proposition. If it's his DNA, Ms. Carroll and her allegations will be believed.

I'm not sure about your statement that no President should respond to someone's personal attorney, but that's more or less irrelevant since Trump will only be President for another 5 weeks. Which means he will have to deal with this soon, which was the point of my original post.

No, it does not prove assault. As I said, there were other people's DNA on her dress and I don't believe any of those people assaulted her. Trump lies about everything so him lying about having met her would hardly be a bombshell story. You can't make the leap from proof of having met someone to assault.

The worst case for Trump would be a settlement for an undisclosed amount.

A case in point are hardcore Trumpers like jamin and hardloper. They live in a very nasty blue state that has them living in fear. Neither will ever move to a Trump loving red state because people living there are nasty and dirty. I disagree. In front of a jury, she will testify that he did it. He will testify that he didn't do it and that, in fact, he never met her. But if his DNA is on her dress, it is proof that she is telling the truth and he is lying.

I guess if you're looking at proof as something that's definitive and indisputable, I'd agree that his DNA on her dress is not that kind of proof. But in the real world, those smoking guns don't usually exist. Usually, proof is more like a bunch of building blocks, that individually maybe don't meant too much but when you put them all together they establish that something either did or didn't happen.

In the end, it's up to the jury to do whatever they want with the evidence. And when you're dealing with celebrities with very competent lawyers, juries can do funny things. But I wouldn't want to be Trump if it is his DNA on her dress, having already denied ever meeting her.

And the worst case for Trump isn't a confidential settlement, it's if the plaintiff refuses to settle and the case goes to trial. And the jury finds that he sexually assaulted her and then defamed her. Even if they award nominal damages, that's still a lot worse for Trump than a confidential settlement. Plaintiff will have to get past a summary judgment motion to get there, though.
